Chameleon Rexxar
- Quest Hunter
- Wild
- Casual
Wild Hearthstone has thousands of cards, and a wide variety of possible decks. This incredible deck diversity is sometimes lost when only looking at the few decks common in the highest ranks. Wildest of Wednesdays is a series aiming to highlight a different off meta deck each week with an in depth guide into its strategy and gameplay. The decks are selected for having interesting synergies and using rarely seen cards.
The Hunter Quest Defend the Dwarven District is usually in decks that only use the original Hunter hero power which you repeat to deal a ton of face damage and win in a otk manner. For me personally, that has never been interesting to play. The idea of this deck is to have a more multidimensional deck where you can switch between this otk play style and pure damage to a board based deck or a value deck. You do this by having Beaststalker Tavish and Deathstalker Rexxar in the deck, and depending on the situation and matchup you can switch between them. This can lead to really fun games such as making 30 Zombeasts in one game. To make this deck even more enjoyable, it has Rhok'delar for random value generation which gives the deck even more replayability. This deck is called Chameleon Rexxar, as just like a Chameleon you will be able to change your "skin" depending on the situation. Overall, if you want to play a deck with the Hunter Quest that you can use to be both a combo, board based, and value deck, and think being able to switch between these playstyles is fun, give this deck a try!
This is a fun version of Quest Hunter that’s not optimized for Ranked. If you want a competitive Quest Hunter deck to climb with, I’d recommend this one from Corbett:

Now, let's get into a guide on playing the deck. It's going to go through major overarching strategies to keep in mind, how to mulligan, gameplay tips on key synergies, and card choices.
Strategies
You can try to do a damage, board, or value strategy, and can switch between them. If you are against a slow enough deck, you can delay the 2nd phase of the quest to after you play a hero so that that hero's hero power will cost 0. You can use 3 spells and hero powers to stall before then.
Damage - You start off as this strategy, using the original Hunter hero power as Rexxar. You will deal damage to be able to destroy the opponent over a couple of turns, as well as deal damage to destroy enemy minions.
Board - Play Beaststalker Tavish to activate this strategy. You will be able to summon multiple Animal Companions each turn to win with board control. Your damage spells will help you with board control. This strategy works best against board based decks where you would otherwise be overwhelmed before your damage hero power could win.
Value - Play Deathstalker Rexxar to activate the Value strategy. You will make a lot of Zombeasts each turn, which can give you control of the board, Lifesteal, damage, and even Poison board clears. Since you make multiple Zombeasts per turn, you maximize the chances of getting a powerful Beast combination. This strategy works best against decks that can gain a lot of armor or heal, where the damage hero power would not be enough to win.
You can choose whichever playstyle you prefer, but of course some are stronger than others in certain situations, so you can switch to whichever will work best in a particular situation.
Mulligans
- Always keep Defend the Dwarven District.
- Keep Rapid Fires and Dragonbane Shots. They are often 2 or more spells in one.
If you want to play with a specific hero, repeating their hero power, you can keep it in the mulligan. Against an aggro deck this is not the best for winrate, but against a slower deck it can be fine, and will definitely let you enjoy this deck more as opposed to if you always mulligan the heroes away.
Gameplay
Below are gameplay tips regarding many of the synergies in this deck and how to use them effectively.
You should try to combo your damage to be able to get Dragonbane Shot to your hand multiple times.
You can combo damage spells with Urchin Spines for hard removal.
You can play 3 damage spells before turn 6 (or 5 with coin) and use your hero power for survival. Then play a hero before playing your 4th damage spell. This way your hero power will cost 0. If you are not planning to switch heroes or want to stay as Rexxar then you don’t need to do this.
If you switch heroes after the 2nd step of your Questline has been completed, your hero power will cost 2 again, but if you have played Tavish, Master Marksman earlier it will still be refreshed by spells.
Card Choices
This section is going to go through the main packages of cards in the deck. Each package has cards that help the deck with a specific goal. When playing the deck, it's useful to know what purposes each card serves and what other cards in the deck have synergy with it or help achieve the same purpose. This section might also be useful if you're interested in the reasoning for why each card was included in the deck.
Quest Package
These cards let you complete the Defend the Dwarven District quest. Afterwards, after you get Tavish, Master Marksman, these spells will refresh your hero power.
Chameleon Package
These heroes allow you to shift your skin and playstyle.
Card Draw and Value Generation
Urchin Spines lets you get more value out of your cheap damage spells. Furious Howl is great to draw when you are running low on cards, while Rhok'delar completely refills your hand with spells.
Triple Hero Questline Hunter, or Chameleon Rexxar, is a fun version of Questline Hunter where instead of having a one dimensional otk gameplay with pure damage, you are able to have 3 different playstyles that you can morph into as well as value from Rhok'delar. If you have a question or comment, or are wondering about a card substitution, post below.
