We've finally seen all the new characters that are joining the Hearthstone universe this year! Blizzard has created these 10 new characters and throughout the year will be telling their stories through online material, the upcoming mercenaries gamemode, and the Book of Mercenaries adventure - their version of the Book of Heroes.
Since they are going to be such a large highlight, we figured it is time to give them the spotlight and get you to know their names better!
The 10 Mercenary Characters
Each class has their own dedicated mercenary character that will be featured throughout the year. Here they all are!
Each character has some flavor text that tells us a bit about them.
- Kurtrus Ashfallen - Kurtrus fled the Black Temple, abandoning Illidan's cause, to seek revenge against the Dreadlord Anetheron.
- Guff Runetotem - "By the twins above and twins below, our companions will lead us through." —Guff Runetotem
- Tavish Stormpike - "Hurry up, laddie, we're getting overrun! Serpents everywhere! They may look cute, but do ye see the fury in their eyes?!" —Tavish Stormpike
- Varden Dawngrasp - Varden Dawngrasp could wield fire, summon hailstorms, and morph a night elf into a sheep with a snap of their fingers. Knowing how malleable reality could be, certain labels felt downright trivial.
- Cariel Roame - Cariel had pledged her honor to the Alliance, but when someone matching her long-lost sister's description was sighted at the Crossroads, Cariel did the unthinkable: she abandoned her post and set out across the Barrens.
- Xyrella - On the Night of Falling Stars, Xyrella had a vision of a shattered naaru. "Go to the Barrens," the being said. "Seek the shards of my broken body. Restore me, and I will restore your daughter."
Scabbs Cutterbutter - "Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. Unless you're compelled to, that is…" —Scabbs Cutterbutter - Bru'kan - Bru'kan, his body weathered and weary, felt his time nearing its end. Teaching brave champions like Rokara gives him hope for a greater future.
- Tamsin Roame - In life, Tamsin Roame was one of the Alliance's most promising mages; now she is the Horde's most dangerous warlock.
- Rokara - "Tread carefully, but stand tall, and stand together. For strength and honor!" —Rokara
In More Places Than One
Our new Legendary friends aren't only found in their namesake cards, but also present within the ranked spells! They all appear within the art of the respective class' card, and some even have special flavor text. We don't have an exhaustive list yet, but here's what we have so far!
- Living Seed (Rank 1) - Every desert needs an oasis. And it's Guff's duty to make it happen.
- Tame Beast (Rank 1) - "Trust me laddie, I never eat seafood!"
- Conviction (Rank 1) - It was the strength of Cariel's faith that emboldened the defenders of Northwatch that day. Although the strength of her giant hammer didn’t exactly hurt either.
- Condemn (Rank 1) - "I wished you no harm, but for your cruelty, by the light, I condemn you all!" Xyrella shouted, unaware that irony was not her strong suit.
We don't know what's next for our friends other than what has been announced so far. Where do you want to see them show up? Are any of our new friends standouts to you? Let us know your thoughts on the new characters in the comments below.

Xyrella, being a Draenei, lacks her head tendrils. All Draenei have them, and serve a function being that they do have nerves in them. Seems like a nitpick, but I kinda want to know if they can add them? Or the reason they're missing?
Swept back under her hair, probably. Just because you can't do it on your own WoW character doesn't mean it can't be done.
I think it might be an oversight because her hero portraits from the tavern pass definitely have them.
Probably something they' can fix if enough people point it out
I hope this isn't taken the wrong way but it is very disappointing Varden Dawngrasp's bio is just their gender identity. Everyone else gets some little snippet of lore or reason for being in the Barrens, but except Varden.
I get that them being non-binary is a highlight, but i really hope it won't be their only personality trait or reason for existance. That would undermine what Blizz is trying to do by making Varden a token diversity character.
It's kind of funny how they express disdain for labels as a means of making sure you know how to label them.
I mean, Rokara's text is also just some generic Horde stuff. I wouldn't judge the character before we get their entire backstory via the single player stuff.
Rokara and Guff are clearly the Wonder Twins of this supergroup.
I wonder if they know how much they suck compared to the rest.
Screenshotting this for when Guff curbstomps the meta.
INnervate and LIghtning Bloom are both Nature spells.
Be afraid.
Sorry, he might look interesting on paper, but in practice he's just a smaller, more awkward Mistrunner that requires you to blow your whole hand in one turn. Druid has better ways to generate stats, and if you're using him alongside those, he's just a winmore card.
I guess you could add a misc section for appearances in other card art, such as Yoink!. I expect they'll be recurring features in art this year like lackeys and the League of EVIL were in the Year of the Dragon.
We'll have something more definitive in a guide - I really wanted to capture the big part of them being legendary cards and featured within the ranked spells which themselves tell a story.
Blizzard is hitting flavour town hard!
Fair enough.
I'm super glad they're going so heavy on the flavour again. I loved the coherency of the artwork in the Year of the Dragon (even if rogue being dominated by kobolds for a whole year was a bit much).
HYPE. I am very excited for the new game mode. Looks like it will have great flavor.
