All of you typing so many words for "Potion Rogue is meta"
Well, the concoctions certainly aren't as weak as I thought, but the only reason I think its playable at all is because of Ghoulish Alchemist helping to cheat these things out. Imagine getting slimy or hazy concoctions out on 2, that's good enough tempo to start with. With Shadowstep you can actually contrive to get a combined concoction out as early as turn 3. That's just insane amounts of value/tempo really.
Unfortunately, that's where I see the cracks from the deck. Its almost entirely dependent on ghoulish alchemist to do anything useful, sort of like relic vault in relic dhunter. Without said ghoul, these concoctions are really just fair stuff, which usually means you'll get steamrolled in constructed. That makes sadly most of these cards unplayable without the ghoul, aside from Concoctor and maybe Potion Belt. Not to mention that potion belt is the only one that lets you choose via discover, everything else is entirely random.
So where can this go? At the moment, Im not exactly sure, but jackpot rogue seems a good fit. That deck tends to suffer from initiative outside of jackpot + trickster, which means you can remove the secrets and go with concoctions. In most other decks like miracle, ghoulish alchemist + potion belt is likely the only cards playable there, because of the mana cheating.
All in all, it really does feel like the concoction cards lacks a win con, almost like team5 is saving something for the miniset wink* wink*
A rather neat package for rogue.
Concoctor -
A slightly understatted 1-drop that gets you a slightly below average card. Might be good enough on it's own but gets a bit better if you can add another concoction to your hand and it does curve with ghoulish alchemist which is nice.
Potion Belt -
The best of the the Concotion generators and very well may be strong enough to quite a bit of play in rogue. Lets you discover an above average card for your current situation, and the pool is small enough that you should usually get just what you want. Kinda like a weaker kazakus.
Potionmaster Putricide -
A really strong value generator for rogue, it just requires minions on board. I'd imagine you could pretty easily get a mixed concoction on curve by trading 1-drops. Is rather random though and I could easily see this getting stuck in hand for turns.
Vile Apothecary -
Easily the worst of the concoction cards. It is the only one I can't see making it on it's own merit, maybe the other support is good enough to make this good though
Ghoulish Alchemist -
One of the greatest reasons to play concoctions. If not enough of the other cards are played though this card will suffer quite a bit. You don't even have to have one in hand to reap value off this card.
these look very fun to tinker with
These concoctions are looking quite fun and interesting. Kinda gives me Kazakus vibes because of the effect mixing, even though most of these cards mix random concoctions. Still these concoctions can give a bunch of everything, and yet again it looks fun. At least fun to play with, but playing against it might be annoying considering it's completely random and some people really dislike playing against these kinda things.
The main problem for this package (from what i can tell) is that the mixed concoctions and normal concoctions cost 3 mana, which might be a bit slow. However you do have Ghoulish Alchemist, and thanks to Shadowstep you can only cheat out 4 (mixed) concoctions for 2 mana or even 0 mana. (over the course of a game) And Preparation can also cheat them out for cheap.
I'm really interested in seeing how this package will turn out! It has some problems, but most of them (like drawing cards like Preparation and etc.) can be fixed by getting the right concoction. (in case of drawing x card, there is the draw 2 cards concoction) I just hope this package wont be too annoying to play against.... But it does look very fun to play.
Strongk AF.
If you didn't enjoy not being able to play around Rogue's random bullshit go, then WotLK is offering you a ticket on the pain train. Except now it's not just random class cards at a discount, it's random degrees of board control and random class cards at a discount. I wonder if the board control effects, though cost-effective, aren't the weakest part of this value vanguard because Rogue can already handle aggro and single, big threats cheated out are a bigger problem and Dreadful Concoction isn't all that reliable in generation or use (but see below).
Being able to tempo out Ghoulish Alchemist and still hit face suggests that maybe some aggro Rogue is a possibility, or at least a draw-dependent fast-start value Rogue.
Vile Apothecary is a soft taunt that would be too fairly priced if Concoctions didn't create cost breaks. It offers undead synergy (Nerubian Vizier for more value) but I doubt that synergy is valuable with the cards so far revealed. Noxious Infiltrator could work here but there's not enough Undead that fits in a value Rogue deck to make that consistent. And if your foe cheats out a big'un, they may play around Noxious Infiltrator by just not killing anything. Other neutral Undead cards have Deathrattles that are too weak to bother maximizing. Apothecary will probably be used for its ability and nothing else.
Note that Potionmaster Putricide doesn't look for friendly minions. So if you can keep your foe's minions around, you can wombo your way into a huge value midgame.
I'm guessing that Concoctions fit neatly into Ghost Rogue and will let you make stupidly-big early Ghosts (Concoctor on 1, then Ghoulish Alchemist, Frostwolf Warmaster, Coin, and Sinstone Graveyard on 3 is bullshit and it hasn't even happened yet). (Edit: I just realized after walking away from the screen that Shadowsteps on Concoctor and Ghoulish Alchemist can get this even bigger and some combination of this is more consistent than Big Priest.) Putricide sticking on 2 allows for more potential shenanigans.
Yah notice how new Rogue cards play nice with old Rogue cards and can support existing archetypes while creating new ones that are thematically appropriate, mechanically fresh, and appear to be at least a little fun at a casual glance? Imagine a wolrd where that was happening with every class. Anyway, Rogues will have a lot of fun on release day,
