  • Dean Ayala Confirms How Hearthstone's Arena Matchmaking Works, Tracked Skill Rating

Partially correct. Dean is saying that match outcomes are decided almost entirely by the skill level of the players involved. That does not imply that the decks are equally strong. Take into account that the better player is also more likely to draft the better deck. Thus, not only does the better player make the better plays, but the better player is also likely to have a better deck. Apparently, situations like you are describing are just not that likely to occur.

  • What do you do on Out of Cards?

Hi, this might seem like a weird question but honestly what do you do on this great HS community site? I see like 886 pages of members (roughly 22K users) and on the first few pages it seems like there is a lot of activity going on, but it does not seem to translate directly to a lot of new posts being created when I look at the recent forum threads, articles or deck comments.

I will start off with myself, I visit OoC daily multiple times:

    • to check on new announcements about HS obviously and participate in the discussion
    • to post in a few dedicated forum threads (reward track progress and such)
    • when I hit legend in a season to post my deck and if anyone is interested discuss about it
    • sometimes I also participate in the fan creation competitions

    What about you? 😅

  • Blizzard Thinks Paladin Remains Stronger Than They'd Like After the Latest Hearthstone Balance Changes

Paladin schmaladin. The real issue is Cariel's goofy mallet and her goofy mallet grip. I've never really looked at that card close, because they just drop two of them and kill me, but it's a little goofy.

Off to battle. Wooden mallet? Check, just wrestled it out of the carny's filthy grip. Prayer book? Yup, it's right there on its purse strap. I'm all set.

  • Dean Ayala Confirms How Hearthstone's Arena Matchmaking Works, Tracked Skill Rating

I'm curious if the "skill rating" is decided solely by wins/win percentage, or if deck composition, and/or smart plays that result in swing-turns plays a role at all.

  • Dean Ayala Confirms How Hearthstone's Arena Matchmaking Works, Tracked Skill Rating

    Am I understand this incorrectly?

They are giving scores to the user's current win/loss state, but not the deck's power. And they are saying since deck powers are equal, the game is decided by the player's skill levels!?

Let's say if a deck is very bad but a very skilled player is piloted it to 5-1 win/loss ratio. Another user which has a lower skill level has a very good deck and achieved a 5-1 ratio also. When these two players compete, how can we say that the player with a higher skill level will win?

I think they should add a multiplier for the deck's estimated power rating when calculating a player's power score.

So Dean just told me to Git Gud here. Well, nice.

  • Make Shaman Mutate Again!

Seriously, how could I forget Custodian?

Also I'm cutting the two Goliaths for more tempo with Derailed Coaster

  • Make Shaman Mutate Again!

Revolve would certainly be something to dig to remove an annoying obstacle or refresh the board. Back in the recent Evolve days I would keep an Owl as a silencer and a 3-cost body (but now we have too many T3).

Evolve could fulfil that role, maybe in place of Guidance?

I like Guidance as a cheap value and randomness tool..as if the deck didn't have enough!

well at least no hidden MMRs there...

    Nooooo thank you.

  • Blizzard Thinks Paladin Remains Stronger Than They'd Like After the Latest Hearthstone Balance Changes

In addition to the various Paladin decks, the thing I'd really like them to address is decks that don't interact with the board. Burn mage, OTK Demon Hunter and Weapon Rogue the prime culprits. I was watching some Grandmasters and dear God... games with almost zero interaction between the players beyond sending burn straight to face.

Those stats make me fear for Hunter. Noone talks about it but it's quietly very solid, getting even this scrub a twelve game win streak (I'm playing my own version of Aggro, not the full on Face net deck from HSR). Damned if I know what card I'd change though.

  • Blizzard Thinks Paladin Remains Stronger Than They'd Like After the Latest Hearthstone Balance Changes

I wish they'd undo the buff on Aldor Attendant. It's such an insane card right now. A three health one drop that curves perfectly into Hand of A'dal and has a permanent positive effect. It's been a problem since Scholomance.

Warrior is my favourite Nature spell user.

Warrior is a very weird class for the prompt, and this is something that we actually spoke about while discussing the specifics of it. Warrior (and to a lesser extent, Hunter) is a class that unlike all the others, does not have a main spell school of choice. They have the least amount of tagged spells in the game at only 5. Fire and Nature were the two biggest ones in the class, both having 2, so we decided to go with that

Follow up question: why did warrior and hunter need 2 schools to begin with when paladin only has holy? Pally has 2 shadow spells but that wasn't forced onto the class.

I can easily see why warrior would have fire for thematic reasons (smelting metal for weapons and armour), even if it rarely makes its way onto cards. But as with paladin's shadow spells, the reasons for the nature tag in warrior are completely external to the class (either a poison from rogue or just because Un'Goro was all about nature) in a way that would be quite fitting for this competition.

In the case of Nature Warrior spells vs Shadow Paladin spells, there are two factors at play here: The flavor of the class as a whole, and the total number of spell cards in the class that have spell types.

2 out 5 Warrior spells with types are Fire spells, or in other words, they make up 40% of Warrior spells with types. Compare that to Paladin Shadow spells, which makes up 2 out of 45 Paladin spells with types, which is only 4.4% of Paladin spells with types.

And then there's class flavor. As you pointed out, fire is an occasional thematic element for Warrior even if it isn't the main focus of the card as it would be for a Mage or Shaman card for instance. While nature is not necessarily a thematic element for Warrior, there is not anti-thematic association either as there is for Shadow spells in Paladin which are supposed to be flavored around being warriors of the light and standing for everything that's right. Shadow spells seem very anti-thematic to the class in a huge way, compared to Fire and Nature to Warrior which are not.

  • Post-nerf Meta Discussion!

they don't know how to balance anythng in terms of winrate, as evidenced by........the latest patch we're discussing.

that also seems like an admission that flow is super broken. better not nerf it, blizzard only does nerfs that have zero impact on the meta.

  • Duels Test

    wtf is this?

  • Blizzard Thinks Paladin Remains Stronger Than They'd Like After the Latest Hearthstone Balance Changes

Probably because the Patch wasn't meant to change the meta.

  • Easiest Fix For Irelia Azir

In general I am convinced that Dunekeeper should become a 1/1.

The ability to shoot 4 damage on turn 1 + his ability to spawn 2 units to chumb/sacrifize for 1 mana is too much for a 1 drop.

I know this nerf is not specifical against azir irelia but shurima in general but it is justified.

The proposed fix is unintuitive and also is making blade dance's idea pointless so I disagree that it is fixing the issue properly.

If you want to fix the archetype higher it's curve by making Ribbon Dancer a 3 mana 2/2 and Flawless Duet costing 2 mana while givng irelia attune in return. the moment that bladedance comes at a higher cost it becomes comparable to rally and rally never was really unfair.

It still was a good archetype versus control but would leave many archetypes more room to breathe and proably kick the deck out of it's tier 1 spot.

  • Would You Want to See Hearthstone's Dungeon Run Updated With New Cards & Bosses? Game Designer Matt London Asks

I would rather have them doing something on the likes of puzzles. That I loved. To me dungeon run was fun but kinda more of the same, whereas puzzle had some strategic thinking sinergized with hearthstone's core, and it was fresh and different

Definitely. Murloc Tidehunter could easily be cut for this.

I like how you capitalize on the Boggspine Knuckles nerf to utilize Kazakus, Golem Shaper, who is a great target to evolve (and can create great evolve targets as well).

    No Revolve?

That would be a good solution, though I would refine it further by making it say "It costs 0 this turn." I think it truly would kill the card if it permanently cost 0, especially as restricting it to this turn still keeps the instances where OMY! backfires.

While I like cards to be flavourful, I generally think it is fine to lose some flavour upon a nerf if the flavour is a serious barrier to balance. The ability to change mana costs normally removes that barrier, but that's not an option for secrets (unless they do the unthinkable and move cards around classes).

Yeah mtg is a good comparison.but there's already passage unearned meaning the game distinguishes between summoned and played units.
