  • Blizzard Adding a Battle Pass to Hearthstone? Survey Highlights Alternate Art for The Coin, New Hero Skins, Paid Leveling Rewards

Ok, everyone. Calm. The. Fuck. Down. This isn’t happening, and it’s very poor reporting on the part of Out of Cards.

Yes, we’re going to get some new progression system this year. It’s on the published roadmap. But we don’t know what the system will be like yet, and Blizzard doesn’t either. If they did know, they wouldn’t be doing these surveys.

I was asked to participate in a market research survey for them last year. I won’t go into the details, since I had to agree to keep silent, but I will say a few things about it:

    1. Almost nothing that they asked me about came to pass. The things that did happen were still very different from the way they had been explained in the survey.
    2. The system they asked me to judge was actually pretty complicated. I had to re-read a few times to understand it.
    3. They asked my opinion about a variety of options, and many were similar variations of each other. It was clear that they were considering many variables, and that I wasn’t even seeing every possibility in my own survey.

Maybe some people saw a chart like this on their survey. That doesn’t mean that it’s Blizzard’s serious choice, even if the survey-taker understood everything that was explained to them. Blizzard is still considering options.

Whatever the final choice is, I’m sure some people will be disappointed in it. I’m sure other people will like it. I’m sure it WON’T be exactly like the one described in the article, which is clearly such a bad deal that it would drive most players away.

Having played a few games of Odd Rogue in Wild, I must say that Secret Passage is completely OP. Reducing the number of cards it draws wouldnt help much imho, this needs to be 2 or even 3 mana.

Just do it. Shit will fly and everyone will talk about it. Every idea is good to stop this stupid system to be implement in this shape.

  • My analysis of the early days of the expansion and my legendary cards

I decided to leave my impressions and thoughts about these first few days of the expansion and an analysis of the legendary cards i've got. The thread is long so bear with me.

Glide is a card that i despised upon first glance. I mostly play slow decks and it looked like something designed to completely screw over with them in aggro DH which is supposed to be weak to Control decks. I only played against two DH with Glide so far. The meta isn't favorable for the card but it's awful if you are trying to keep resources in hand. They vomit everything on their hand and then they play this and refill their hand while discarding yours (it's not true discard but it feels like that). It may not be as op as i thought but it's as anti-fun as i thought.

I got Lorekeeper Polkelt from the bundle and i've been testing him mostly in highlander decks. It's an interesting card that has its uses but it can be a liability as well. You can play him one turn before you get to your big cards and you are guaranteed to draw them on the next turn. I have used it to have Dinotamer Brann consistently in my hand by turn 7 but if you don't draw Polkelt in time then he just becomes useless. Also, he's bad for specific card combinations. I've been testing Professor Slate in the deck as well and it's not good to have both him and/or Rapid Fire at the bottom of your deck. Polkelt is a little tricky to use properly and not as much of a meta breaker as people thought.

Speaking of Professor Slate, that's a card i haven't seen at all. Not in ladder, not in videos, absolutely nothing. I decided to test the card and it's quite good. Hunter doesn't lack hard removal. In fact, they have a lot of it right now with both Slate and Krolusk Barkstripper joining his arsenal alongside Deadly Shot and Rotnest Drake. The key difference is that Slate isn't random. You can choose your destruction target and that's relevant against wider boards. The problem is the lack of good spells to use with the card. Rapid Fire is good with Slate and... pretty much nothing else. Well, there's Vereesa Windrunner but nobody uses her so... Yeah. Besides that, we have Explosive Shot and Multi-Shot. These are not good enough. There will be people making the atrocious mistake of running into an Explosive Trap before removing Slate but i can't really count secrets as those are very easy to play around. In the end, the card lacks proper support but he can easily become great with a decent and cheap Multi-hit/AoE spell (like Grievous Bite in Wild).

Mindrender Illucia is another card that's really hard to utilize properly. She is mostly good for disrupting combos but those are extremely rare because the ladder is full of aggro decks. In my experience, she isn't great in control or midrange games because even if you waste your opponent's resources they can do the same to you. You don't want to play her with your big cards in hand and if you wait too much then there won't be much left to disrupt. In aggro games you can actually use her more effectively because your opponent is mostly holding low cost cards and you are holding high cost cards. If you play her early you can screw them and they won't be able to do much with your hand. Overall, she is another card that's really tricky to play with and she gives me the tech card vibe.

The meta isn't great on my end as i'm facing Druid all the time. There are a lot of Face Rogues (ugh...) and all sorts of Hunter decks as well. I rarely see Paladins and Warriors and not much else. Druids tend to fall apart pretty quickly against any aggression. However, it's undeniable that Lightning Bloom is a liability and it's just going to cause problems for the remainder of the year and the next one. Secret Passage is also pretty ridiculous. Voracious Reader is only good in extreme hyper aggressive decks that vomit their hands very quickly but the card isn't very good in any deck with cards that costs 4 or more. I think it will be fine if Face DH and Face Rogue fall from the meta.

Just as i expected, Mozaki, Master Duelist is extremely difficult to utilize as she is a combo card and the ladder is infested with aggression. Combo decks just fall apart very easily because of that. So far, she seems like a big meme that's going to see play just because combo lovers will never give up on making cards like that work. Ras Frostwhisper is much better and can be slotted into Highlander Mage without any other support cards. I don't play Shaman so i don't know how he's doing in that class. Btw, Ras is the only dual class legendary i've got so far. Really unlucky.

Finally, there's Sphere of Sapience. The card is very good in specific decks. I utilize it in my Wild OTK Miracle Priest. The deck always ran into the problem of drawing my big key minions before i could play Zerek's Cloning Gallery and the weapon prevents that which greatly increased its consistency. The weapon is good in Big Warrior and Duel Paladin as well because you really want to keep the big minions in the deck so you cheat them out. Sphere is pretty good, especially in decks that want to keep certain cards inside the deck.

Edit: I completely forgot about Infiltrator Lilian. I guess that's how much i care about aggressive cards. I tried her in a Secret Passage Stealth Rogue and it was fine. The deck has a lot of damage. Self-Sharpening Sword and Vulpera Toxinblade are really strong. Sometimes i didn't even need Secret Passage to win but that card just improves the deck's consistency a lot. Drawing 5 cards for so little just leaves a ton of flexibility and you can make the most out of your mana because of it. Also, if you draw Eviscerate the combo is going to active already. Lilian itself is just okay. The guaranteed damage can make the difference occasionally but she isn't needed to play a deck like this.

So far, the expansion just feels okay. There's some big mana cheat shenanigans happening (mostly because of Lightning Bloom but High Abbess Alura also contributes to the issue), lots of aggro decks, combo decks dying to aggro decks (as always) and Control decks seem to be AFK (at least, i haven't seen a lot of them). Let's see what's going to happen next week. Any thoughts? Thanks for reading!

  • Blizzard Adding a Battle Pass to Hearthstone? Survey Highlights Alternate Art for The Coin, New Hero Skins, Paid Leveling Rewards

Honestly what really bothers me about this is how it seems to be targetting f2p almost intentionally.

They could have just made the Battle pass an optional thing for minor cosmetics and extra packs (aka how they handled Adventures in the last year except with way less effort) but they insist on making a handicap for progress.

Who is this even supposed to appeal to? The casuals won't like it because they don't have time to grind. The whales won't like it because they'd rather buy their stuff upfront instead of having to pay for the privilege to earn it.

This is literally the problem of "people would probably buy some hero skins seperately but not as part of an 80$ bundle because that's just too much" except applied to everything and also mandatory.

I'm just gonna put this out: A dedicated player can easily save up to 12000 gold between expansions (depending on events and how much 3-win gold they decide to grind). I have done this multiple times and it has worked fine for me. With this new system the gold ceiling is A THIRD of that. This is the amount of gold I saved up for this expansion...AND I DIDN'T PLAY FOR TWO MONTHS OF IT. Furthermore, despite opening 43 packs this expansion I'M still missing a good amount of rares, meaning that if you are fully f2p YOU CANNOT EVEN UNLOCK THE BASICS OF THE EXPANSION ON DAY ONE.

We're not even talking about losing stuff by comparison anymore. You flat out CANNOT COMPETE anymore unless you actively spend money.

My dustbin has been growing steadily over the past years because of my rather conservative spending and very liberal disenchanting policy. I have over 50k dust because I like to be flexible with crafting and not regret whenever I craft a bad legendary for experimental purposes. If this goes through my dust reserves would most likely be empty within 3-4 expansions if I want to keep playing for fun instead of just playing the 3 best meta deck. I should also note that I'm not even fully f2p as  I have spent a good amount on several occasions for various things because I felt like treating myself (only one preorder ever though). Now just think how much worse this would be for someone who wasn't nearly as dedicated to building up ressources.

If this goes through the game will unironically die. We're talking completely unplayable from a financial standpoint for anyone but the wealthy...and even those will probably ditch just because of how objectively stupid and predatory this is.

I've seen a lot of predatory monetization and I have studied the behaviour of whales...but this is quite possibly the worst one ever. The thing they don't seem to grasp is that the reason why whales are so eager to spend loads of money on worthless content is because they will always operate under the illusion of choice, hence why most battle passes (and other overpriced gimmicks) usually feature cosmetics exclusively. The moment you tie whaling to actual gameplay and make it mandatory, they will jump ship. They want to pay to show off, not pay to win.

Again, everyone who needs proof of this, just read up on the OB64 fiasco for Paladins: Champions of the Realm. Basically the same type of "if you really wanna play you gotta pay"....and absolutely nobody was on board and the thing was axed a couple months later and is even memed by the devs at this point for being utterly idiotic.

Blizzard, you target audience is fucking stupid, but they're not that stupid...and even stupid people hate being exploited once they realize it...and you haven't done a good job hiding it.

  • The New King Of LOR

Yeah lux thresh is pretty legit, and everyone knows scouts is good. Farron has done well for me personally, I always find that opponents know how to answer 1 Swain 1 Leviathan, and they are sitting at 8 - 6 health with no healing, or you just wiff on leviathan on certain hands, or it's Sej Ash and they are just like clogging the board with big dudes, rex will do nothing. But if it's an Ezreal list rex will destroy them so that's your 50/50

Pensé en lo mismo, creo que tendrían que encontrar una forma en la que si compras el pase no te sientas tan obligado a comprar también la precompra de la expansión,si no sería demasiada plata y tiraría para atrás a muchos jugadores

  • Blizzard Adding a Battle Pass to Hearthstone? Survey Highlights Alternate Art for The Coin, New Hero Skins, Paid Leveling Rewards

which doesn't account for said cards becoming better with more support.

Prime example right now: Archwitch Willow. Good card, but not enough support to make it work. Now, generally I am hopeful Big Demon Warlock will be a thing at some point...but I have no guarantee. So (pretending if we had the system right now) do I craft her now and gamble or do I not and need more dust later on when she does become a real thing?

That's not a good thing, it's a bandaid fix with which they disguise how much they cut down the ability to obtain cards through just playing the game.

  • Blizzard Adding a Battle Pass to Hearthstone? Survey Highlights Alternate Art for The Coin, New Hero Skins, Paid Leveling Rewards

Hot garbage. Blizzard continues to screw invested players in order to satisfy casuals. Hope it backfires.

  • The New King Of LOR

Most times you can't really make big assumptions about the meta because there  isn't enough information and sample size. The meta is very diverse and changes a lot. There are dozens of decks that are viable and if  you're good enough you can get over 60% winrate with tons of decks

I seriously doubt Demacia Garen and Shen Fiora are amongst the top 10/20 decks. The best demacia decks should be Lux Thresh and MF scouts.

I actually have been playing TF Swain this week and been doing quite well, its quite versatile and fun to play. I think captain farrow is too greedy maybe, i run 1 rex and 1 more zap, the rest is the same.

I want to start an online petition to make Blizzard reconsider this.  How many signatures do you think we’d need?  Personally I think adding a paid battle pass is fine, but I feel like it should be in addition to the existing rewards structure.

If I start one I’ll need help spreading it around, spamming it in Twitch chats of Hearthstone streams, etc.

I’m a bit surprised Big Warrior didn’t make this list. I’ve been doing pretty well with it. It does amazing against the aggressive decks, beats paladin as well and only really struggles against Druid (but what doesn’t other than the really aggressive stuff) and priest.

but cool list nonetheless! I’m definitely going to be trying a few of these.

You've been beating Paladin? I've really struggled in that matchup. Winnable but it doesnt feel favored, really depends on whether you can run the Paladin out of resources or not. 90%+ of my games have been against Paladin, Druid, and control priest so big warrior has been an unplayable deck in my experience. But I'm sure it would perform a lot better if you were seeing more Rogues and Mages and stuff like that.

Yes this suprised me too since crushes most decks and can easily be brought to legend. I just hit legend rank myself with Big warrior and it was an awesome climb. Some of the most fun ive had in a while. I was not struggling against druids tho since a good bladestorm or brawl easily could take out a lot of his big minions. Where i struggled was against the pure paladins because they kept filling their board with an endless amount of minions. You will basicly never be able to outvalue pure paladin and espesially the blessings of wisdoms can be extremly annoying in a long game.

My interest in Hearthstone has been waning quite a bit since LoR won my heart.

This'll either make or break it for me.

I already lost my interest in hearthstone a long time ago, only come online from time to time to do the free packs from tavern brawls and events(even stopped trying to get the the ranked card backs cuz i don't have fun playing it anymore). But this just makes it worse and doesn't make me play it more like they say... actually it makes me want to play it less. Hope they realise this is not a good move.

Just cuz battlepasses are everywhere these days doesn't mean you should make one

A fun legendary like whizbang or ETC or that one from rise of shadows. A noncompetitive card that has some nobility to it.

  • Blizzard Adding a Battle Pass to Hearthstone? Survey Highlights Alternate Art for The Coin, New Hero Skins, Paid Leveling Rewards

This sounds like it would really suck. I built up about 8500 gold for Scholomance after plowing every bit of gold into Ashes of Outland packs on day 1 and not spending any after that. So I got 85 packs on day 1 of Scholomance. This thing, if I am understanding it right, proposes to give me enough gold for 39 packs on launch and then slowly trickle out another 18 packs over 4 months.

Some real "don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining" stuff if Blizzard goes through with this and acts like they've improved the experience for the F2P player.
