Glad they are doing this. I really like how MTG opens its development with Mark Rosewater's Making Magic articles so I think this is a nice move from Team 5. I know it's only a Card Back but it's a step on the right direction to share the magic behind the scenes with the community.
I would say Tess Greymane, but she's a pretty good card i.m.o. However my favorite BAD card is definitely Academic Espionage. Gives you a lot of value, but i guess all that value isn't that useful when your opponents gets all SMOrc on your face. If only the meta had slowed down enough. (become control/value oriented when this was still in standard)
Academic Espionage is a weird card in general. You need so much card draw to actually support it, because if you’re only drawing one card per turn, then the cost of that one card doesn’t really matter that much.
Personally my favorite bad card is Toshley, the first legendary I opened back when I started playing. Haven’t used him in awhile though, kind of miss him
I feel like having potentially a short limit on what you could write in that description could work (like a single sentence kind of thing). Not having any context like that would leave potentially new mechanics (or returns of older mechanics that haven’t been used that much, like Rafaam’s artifacts or spare parts) on a lower ground compared to something that more people would already know about. While they don’t specifically *need* that context, as people can figure out some of that stuff, there’s plenty of times where someone might misunderstand it and view the card differently than if they knew how it would work
They make sense mechanically rather than flavor wise. A big part of how murlocs work is buffing each other up, which is another thing Paladin’s supposed to be good at, so it does make sense for them to be in the class. Even with Shaman though, I feel like I don’t see people complaining about it too much just because they’ve been a thing in the class for so long, rather than being added in a few expansions later
well, maybe a bit Less outside of the box... the anagram does answer the interview question coherently (meaning it’s closer to a set), but consider this: if the anagram only reveals the set, how come that alone is enough to discover the card?
Okay, so say it was an anagram of "They entered my woods", the solution would be Hagatha the Witch?
possibly. the important thing to remember is that there’s a reason why I presented this riddle With an interview: the card is genuinely trying to answer the question conventionally
Not very satisfied with Leyline Contriver so I decide to cut down my ideas to two here, what y'all think? Mostly rebalancing Candleseer and fixing Boarmaster's wording.
Wow, thanks for the shout-out! I was literally playing the Quest Warrior deck as I read this article. I'm currently 35-25 (58%), sitting at Platinum 2 - 3 stars. I'm determined to hit legend with it this month. Theoretically, I'm only about another 25-30 games away, but maybe I'll hit a four game win streak tonight! (The road to legend is still a grind even with the new easier system). I plan to write a guide when I hit legend.
I love using "bad" cards. Something satisfying about winning with the unexpected.
Zerek, Master Cloner was one I tried hard to get right. I haven't played with him since he rotated but maybe it's time for round two.
Confessor Paletress is still my old favorite. Heck Inspire as a whole is something I like. I can see the problems with it but I really enjoyed a lot of these cards. Mukla's Champion was a particular favorite that I managed to work well back in the day.
Current standard favorite is Transmogrifier! So fun. Especially with the "cards you draw cost zero this turn" effects. Random zero cost Legendaries!
I'm glad you put the actual text there for all to read. The language is important to see as it doesn't really leave much room for interpretation.
It states "Excess damage I deal...".
Damage dealt = 0
0 does not have any "excess", it's 0.
The excess of 0 will always be 0, there is no way around that without defying the laws of mathematics, language, and logical reasoning.
Even narratively, it doesn't make sense. Like if I imagine the scenario played with miniatures, or a film . Imagine if the magical "Barriers" cast by the heroes of our fantasy realms only had the amount of effect as the caster's "HP"; suddenly Gandolf's iconic "You shall not pass" moment is relatively ineffective because he does pass, just with slightly less power.
Okay, I've ranted for long enough, please share your thoughts.
Against most decks your win condition is fatigue, but if your opponent has a low-value deck, you could try to beat them with taunts.
When on the fatigue plan, try to cast Naturalize multiple times per turn, so you burn as many cards as possible.
Oaken Summons is good early on if Deathlord is banned, since you can evade the battlecry of Hecklebot. Don't over-use it though, especially if Naturalize was banned, since you can give up your fatigue advantage that way.
If the opponent has a card that shuffles, ban that if possible.
I don't understand your logic at all, if you are using the language as it is written in the ability description.
It very clearly states that "Excess damage I deal to my blocker is dealt to the enemy Nexus".
EXCESS DAMAGE I DEAL.....
Since the damage dealt to the blocker was 0, there is no "excess" damage. Unless you are arguing that 0 has an excess, which is mathematically impossible and defies all logical reasoning, I don't see how you come to your determination. The excess of 0 will always be 0, there's no way around that fact.
No, they are better then random. Now that i think about it, they are even worse then random unless its a mirror match. Why? Because followers in this game have a role in the deck they are fit in. The game is balanced enough units are not being played for their stats/curve ratio. A unit that is good enough to see play in a given deck, won't usually see play in other decks unless its fullfilling the same role. Take a burn deck as an example. If you could pick, which cards would you steal from their deck? 90% of their cards are actually garbage for your gameplan. They work very well for their strategy but not for yours. Worse then random, as random cards may actually give you a shot to some counters.
I think you wildly misunderstand the difference between "game balance" and "card quality." Sure, there's a lot of effort put into balancing the game and making sure different strategies have entirely different sets of cards to support those strategies. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of bad cards in the game.
Taking your example of a burn deck, will my midrange or control deck be thrilled to steal a Crimson Disciple from my enemy? Probably not, because my deck probably doesn't have the self harm cards needed to trigger its effect. But it's objectively way better than Flame Chompers! or Feral Mystic or Intrepid Mariner or Jae Medarda any number of other units that aren't good enough to see play in any deck, or are totally pointless against the burn deck because of how expensive they are.
Almost by definition, if no meta deck is running a particular card, it's because that card isn't a very effective tool against the existing metagame. So, there will always be lots of cards which are below average in quality, don't see play, and are worse than stealing from your opponent's deck. Your stolen cards don't need to fit your deck's plan, they need to be better than the universe of random garbage you might have otherwise generated, and almost by definition, they will be.
If both effects already exists in the game, why the combination of the 2 is a problem?
This kind of question reflects a really basic misunderstanding about game balance. I can have two cards that are complete garbage on their own, but when I combine them into a single card, even if there's a "bundling tax" on the mana cost, they become incredibly powerful. This is because you have a limit on how many cards you can run, and the opportunity cost associated with running two meh cards much higher than the opportunity cost of running one card with two meh effects attached to it.
It's hard to find an example in Legends of Runeterra because the game is relatively new, and there aren't a ton of these "bundling" examples yet. But a great example of this in Hearthstone is Branching Paths. 4 mana draw 2 is bad, 4 mana buff +2/+0 is okay for a token deck but not the best that Druid has, and 4 mana heal 12 is okay in certain metagames. You might not run any one of those cards in Druid, but the fact that they all came bundled on one card that let you mix and match effects made Branching Paths very powerful.

Yeah, a lot of the HS people always hop into the new games early on for the viewership spike - its a wonderful idea!
I would love to see a lot more activity on the Runeterra stream side of things, though, the game is still pretty small compared to HS and event MTGA.
