After piecing together Hearthstone teasers and leaked information on Reddit, it looks like the theme of the next Hearthstone set, due to be officially announced tomorrow, is Academy of Scholomance.
What is Scholomance?
Scholomance was a school of necromancy founded by [Hearthstone Card (Kel’Thuzad) Not Found] to train prospective necromancers for the Scourge. From this secret base, the first plague of undeath was created and unleashed on the human kingdoms to weaken it for the Scourge invasion and transform the fallen into new undead soldiers. Scholomance is also where the first abominations were created.
Even after the defeat of Kel’Thuzad, the Lich King, and the rest of the Scourge, Scholomance persisted under necromancers and liches who served as the headmasters and teachers.
The school itself is inspired by a Romanian legend about a place called Scholomance (meaning ‘school of magic’) existing in the middle of a lake that teaches black magic and is run by the devil. The famous Count Dracula novel claims that the Count spent several years training in Scholomance.
Given Hearthstone’s lighter tone, it is highly possible that the more gruesome and terrifying aspects of this school will be sidelined by a potentially more Hogwarts-like atmosphere with a fun and goofy school theme.
Here's the description of Scholomance from World of Warcraft.
Quote From Blizzard The Scholomance is housed within a series of crypts that lie beneath the ruined keep of Caer Darrow. Once owned by the noble Barov family, Caer Darrow fell into ruin following the Second War. As the wizard Kel'thuzad enlisted followers for his Cult of the Damned, he would often promise immortality in exchange for serving the Lich King. The Barov family fell to Kel'thuzad's charismatic influence and donated the keep and its crypts to the Scourge. The cultists then killed the Barovs and turned the ancient crypts into a school for necromancy known as the Scholomance. Though Kel'thuzad no longer resides in the crypts, devoted cultists and instructors still remain. The powerful lich, Ras Frostwhisper, rules over the site and guards it in the Scourge's name — while the mortal necromancer, Darkmaster Gandling, serves as the school's insidious headmaster.
Individuals seeking to master the powers of undeath know well of Scholomance, the infamous school of necromancy located in the dark and foreboding crypts beneath Caer Darrow. In recent years, several of the instructors have changed, but the institution remains under the control of Darkmaster Gandling, a particularly sadistic and insidious practitioner of necromantic magic.

I used to love the vanilla version, I love the atmosphere of all the early wow dungeons. They've toned them down and made them shorter nowadays but the longer versions were just epic to me back in the day.
If the leaks are true then I'll be excited for this expansion.
Thanks again for writing this piece of lore. Maybe we will see a new tribe around Undead/Scourge, if that is indeed the next exp.
WoW has so many lore chapters - the HS team has material for so many years ahead. They just need to be creative transforming them into cards. The foundation is there.
Thanks for the briefing, you're a great lore-yer! This looks exciting to me. I wouldn't mind either alternative: a darker themed expansion like Nax or a Harry Potter crossover fun one.
I really hope for the Harrypottersque flair instead of the heavily morbid atmosphere of the old Scholomance.
It could be we're seeing the early stages of Scholomance, or a parallel fate where Necromancy was or will be fought off by other Professors in the school.
Less corpses, more Mystery!
Remember Blizzard is good at pulling from the area too. In Ashes of Outland they wanted to go with the Black Temple but ended up pulling in all of Outland. I can see Scholomance doing the same. Pulling characters from other schools of magic (Dalaran, Nar'thalas in Azsuna, Karazhan) or prominent characters from the area. In Western Plaguelands we have Hearthglen (Scarlet Crusade), Andorhal and even Uther's Tomb. In the Eastern we have the Argent Dawn, Stratholme, and Darrowshire. All these places have characters that could show up. However I don't disagree that a Harry Potteresque theme is right up Blizzard's alley. Still were are my dragons and murlocs! I know they'll find a way in there.
Excited to see what cards they'll come up with for some of the interesting characters found in the school. Gandling, Rattlegore, Lillian Voss, all the Barovs, and Krastinov the butcher. Should be fun!
Howiepenguin: Yes true. I tried to stick with most logical (Magic/undeath). Though if I remember right those trolls were cursed or something too.
Goliath: Yes exactly. I can imagine an Argent Dawn spy trying to learn about the school or Scarlet Crusaders of Hearthglen used as target practice for the spells.
There's also the area north of WPL that is home to Zul'aman and Silvermoon city. So troll and blood elfs can be on the table with that logic too.
Great ideas about how it could expand to include more characters. Throwing in Uther's tomb and teh Argent Dawn/Scarlet Crusade would answer the question of how the heck they are going to make paladin cards out of a set based in a secret school for necromancers.
Who remembers killing themselves in the Fire outside the door, to body hop in and rez to pull the lever, if you didn't have the Key? Ahhh such memories.
oh boy I can't wait for Little Witch Academia in Scholomance
I did a quick Search and found that there's apparently 5 Courses at the School:
So, there might be a slight Chance that we could see some Factions with Multi-Class Cards.
...Or maybe they do it like they did it back then with Gadgetzan and straight up make up 5 Houses.
yep, 2 for each would be cool. And like in MSoG we could choose quest line at the start of the expansion. Or maybe even choose course leg who will randomly drop (i m pretty sure, not, but would be cool).
that would be awesome
Really hoping they go for some darker themes like with Naxxramas or Whispers for this, instead of going a really lighthearted one for it. As fun as a silly expansion can be, I’m much more of a fan of the former
Fair point, but it's more likely that they will go on the goofy side to balance out the seriousness of Outland's tone.
One example of this serious tone?
VENGEANCE!!!
Is mine?
I remember getting help from some guild mates to obtain a paladin mount in here in WoW - they all hated to do it!
