Hearthstone's Game Director, Ben Lee, has made an announcement on the rewards track and updates that will be arriving this month.
- December 15 - One-time login reward of 5 Darkmoon Faire packs and 500 Gold. (Available until Jan 18)
- The XP to get to level 50 is being reduced by almost 20%.
- Bonus levels past level 50 are being redesigned.
- Blizzard believes the rewards track to 50 should no longer require event XP. (Event XP bonuses are gone)
- When you login after the changes, you may be at a higher level than previously. No XP is being lost.
Reward Changes
- 50 Gold is being added to levels 27 and 30.
- The maximum bonus level is being increased to 350, up from 150.
- Levels past 50 will have their rewards split so you earn rewards in smaller chunks, faster. (50g per level)
Quest Changes
- Legendary Card and Arena weekly quests are being removed.
- Winning 7 games of ranked is being changed to 5.
- Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds now contribute to quest progression.
- Some quests are having their numbers being tweaked to be easier to complete.
- All 800 XP quests now reward 900 XP.
We'll have all the datamined information once the client patch goes live next week. Blizzard also states that they are still not done with the rewards track and they will continue to evaluate the system until they get it right.
Quote From Ben Lee Since the launch of the new progression system, we’ve been listening to player feedback and carefully reviewing gameplay data from the first few weeks while designing a variety of updates to meaningfully address the elements that feel too slow, not rewarding, or too difficult to complete. We’re committed to getting this right. Our intent has been, and continues to be, to provide more rewards and a better progression experience than the previous system, and we’re sorry that our initial implementation missed that mark in a few important areas.
We’re ready to detail a series of changes that we will begin releasing later this month, and we will continue working to make the system even better over time. In this update, we will be adjusting or removing quests that players have let us know are too difficult to complete, reducing the amount of XP required to complete the 50-level rewards track by nearly 20%, adding two gold rewards on the track, and redesigning the bonus levels after level 50. We’re also planning a one-time log-in reward of 5 Darkmoon Faire packs and 500 Gold beginning on December 15th, which will be available until January 18th.
We want to make it clear that we aren’t treating the new rewards and progression systems as static, unchanging game elements, but rather a system that we can continually iterate on and improve over time. More enhancements will be coming to the rewards track in the future.
Here are the changes we are making later this month, as well as a quick look into the discussions we’re having for changes that will be coming early next year.
We’re adjusting a variety of daily and weekly quests to make them easier to complete.
We now have a large amount of player feedback and data based on the first few weeks of daily and weekly quest completion, and we’re making numerous changes to improve quests overall.
- We’re removing weekly quests that require Legendary cards and Arena runs. These quests are more difficult than intended for players due to the investment necessary. Frankly, these were a mistake and we shouldn’t have included them to begin with. They’ll no longer be in the quest pool after the update. Please note that if they are among your active quests after the update, they will not be automatically removed, but you can reroll them for a different quest.
- We’re changing the weekly quest “Win 7 Games of Ranked Play Mode” to “Win 5 Games of Ranked Play Mode.” This quest, as a guaranteed weekly quest, feels like it requires too much effort to complete. Adjusting the win requirement will ensure that a larger number of players will complete this weekly quest and keep up with the rewards.
- Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds will now contribute to quest progress. Tavern Brawls and Battlegrounds will reward progress for any daily or weekly quests that they should naturally apply to. This should allow more flexibility in how to complete quests and make the rewards more consistent with previous gold earnings. For example, you’ll now be able to complete a quest like “Play Three Games as Priest, Rogue, or Warlock” by playing Tavern Brawls, and quests that require you to play Beasts, for example, can be completed by playing Beasts in Battlegrounds.
- We’re making small tweaks to certain quests. Some quests simply aren’t working as well as we think they should or are harder to complete than intended. For example, the quest “Play 50 Corrupt Cards” had a couple of issues making it too hard to complete. Now, Corrupted cards will properly count toward progress of this quest. We’re also reducing the requirement to 30 Corrupt Cards. These changes should make completing the quest much easier.
- All 800 XP daily quests will now reward 900 XP. We want to make quests feel more rewarding, so we’re increasing XP for daily quests so you can earn to your next rewards more quickly. Our hope is to make every quest feel like it rewards you for your time appropriately, and we’ll continue to make changes as needed.
We’re reducing the amount of XP needed to reach certain levels in the rewards track.
We’ve heard your feedback: higher levels of the reward track just take too much XP to reach. We originally included event reward XP when calculating our intended cadence of rewards. We’ve rethought this and recognize that the rewards track should stand on its own and not require event XP bonuses, making rewards predictable and consistent across an expansion. We will still have in-game events, of course, but they will remain consistent with our existing approach to event rewards instead of rewarding bonus XP for the rewards track.
We’re reducing the requirements of the current rewards track by a total of 37,000 XP (nearly 20%), which will make mid-to-late levels easier to reach and adjust for the absence of XP events. After this change, you’ll see that the XP requirement for a variety of levels will be lower and progression through levels will be faster. This is one step to ensure that progress through the rewards track feels consistent and doesn’t hit unusually slow periods of progress. The upcoming changes to daily and weekly quests should also support more rapid progress through these levels.
After this change is implemented, your existing earned XP value will be retained, so upon your next login you may see additional progress through levels based on your current XP total. Please review your rewards track to see what new rewards you may be able to claim.
We’re adding more gold rewards to certain levels of the rewards track.
We’re adding 50 gold to the current rewards for levels 27 and 30. This is a simple change based on the rewards for those levels feeling especially underwhelming, and this helps us inject more gold into the rewards track to address feedback about slower gold earnings.
We’re adjusting rewards track bonus levels to provide steadier gold income.
We’re redesigning the bonus rewards after completing levels 1-50. Player feedback highlighted how these bonus levels took too much time to earn, leading to long play sessions between rewards. The maximum bonus level is now 350, up from 150, and we’re splitting the XP and rewards across these levels. Each level beginning at level 51 will now take less XP to complete and reward 50 gold. After this change, you’ll see more rapid progress through these levels, though your earnings for each level will be smaller (as the XP and rewards have been split across 200 more levels). This will help players earn gold without an unusually high level of effort. We’ll be watching closely to ensure this gets players more predictable gold earnings.
What’s next?
As we said earlier, these will not be our final changes to Hearthstone’s rewards and progression. Like with all content and systems within the game, our intent is always to release content, monitor feedback and data, and make the right choices for our players. We knew this would be a new and complex system that required iteration, and we are committed to short-term changes and a long-term vision to make this a fun and rewarding part of Hearthstone. We also want to strike a balance between making changes quickly and ensuring that we get things right, and we’re taking additional time past this point to plan the next round of updates that we would like to implement in the future.
We have some ideas about tweaking the 1-50 experience to make progression feel even better for players. We will keep working on this system to get it right, and we will share more information as we finalize our future plans. We’re thankful and fortunate to have such a passionate community, and your constructive feedback is always heard.

This is why I didn't start raging and quit the game. I took the dev's word for it when they said they would tweak the system. The concerns were definitely justified, but I didn't feel like Blizzard lied to everybody, like most of reddit and a few people here. Perhaps if it hadn't been fixed by the end of the expansion I might have stopped playing as much.
Thank fuck they removed the win 4 arena games quest. I never got that one, but I usually win 2 or 3, so that would've been an automatic reroll.
Win 7 in a week seemed easy for me, but as long as it's still worth 2000 I won't complain.
I'm glad they're fixing the tavern brawl quest issue. I'd thought that was a bug, but I think they removed mention of completing quests in tavern brawl from the loading screen text.
If you've already passed level 27 or 30, do you get the extra 50 gold automatically?
Edit: Was there a mistake, or is the planned reward for 30 a pack+50 gold?
There is no way in the world they would have made changes this large if people had not raged so long and so hard.
So, if you like the changes, you can thank the people who raged. If they hadn't done so, you'd be stuck eternally with version 1.0 of the track.
I think the people that said Blizzard is pretty bad at transparency and communication are right, and that very likely fueled the rage. But I'll thank the people that gave useful feedback. I never said much, here, or on reddit, but I had nothing to add on top of what everyone was saying anyway.
Feedback is one thing. A bunch of raging twats is something else.
Perhaps they would've stuck with the extra exp. during events plan, but they were pretty well always saying the system would be tweaked and iterated on.
Edit: I should've thought about that community feedback is a vital part of the iteration process. Still, I think there was a lot that wasn't all that helpful.
I had the play three tavern brawl quest yesterday. While queuing one up I saw that exact tip and chuckled to myself. On one hand I was completing a quest by playing, but it wasn't counting towards my play three games as X class quest.
It's honestly tiring to see people get so emotional so quickly. I kinda can't blame them though since Blizzard these days has cemented themselves as an asshole-ish company. I just wish people can have more patience instead of making a Reddit post about how "Blizzard will not respond and here's why".
I feel unrewarded playing casual mode and miss my 3 win gold/reward.
I Do not miss 10gold for 3wins AT ALL it was a horrible horrible system.
and for casual rewards if antyhing id liek to see so can sti get progress towards the 500/1k win portaits in casual arena and dues do aswell
This. Sometimes I just want to dork around with a meme deck and maybe complete a few achievements, but as of right now I am only rewarded for Ranked.
You're rewarded 25% less. You're still getting "rewarded". But yeah I don't like it either.
Ok, good. A step in the right direction. The new system actually gives more than the old one right now, but it's by such a thin margin that the outrage was, in my opinion, justified. To me, however, its biggest issue is the lack of transparency, which was addressed to a certain degree;
Now, regarding the daily/weekly quests change:
Never had the Legendary cards quest, but that's something that's well implemented in the achievement portion of the system, the quest overall wasn't needed. Regarding the Arena quest, it's a welcome change: not only because not everyone plays arena, but because it required the arena run to actually end: I had a run midway when the quest popped up last week, I was 4-1, and only got the reward after the arena run ended (I ended at 4-3, the deck wasn't that good, I just highrolled like hell the first few games).
In my opinion, the difficulty of that quest wasn't the number of wins needed: it was the fact that those wins had to come through Ranked Mode. If the original quest was "Win 7 games IN ANY GAME MODE", that would actually go towards the promise that we can get ahead by playing HS "our way", rather than just "the main game mode way". If I just want to get to D5 and focus on other game modes for the rest of the month (like I usually do), I shouldn't need to play more ranked just to get the weekly quests. And as far as BG is concerned in that scenario, simply consider any game we end at top 4 as a win, like the old system did when counting towards 10g/3win.
Honestly, great change, especially the BG part. That can give the mode an extra breath of fresh air.
Good. I got the Corrupt cards weekly today and I was justifiably salty when my Corrupted Strongman didn't count towards the quest.
800XP quests always get re-rolled. 900XP quests will also always get re-rolled. But they won't feel as bad if we end up with another 900XP daily.
Now, the rest of the changes, especially the XP per level discount, were good steps towards the right direction. Putting an extra 50G on level 27 and 30 puts those level rewards on par with what we get around those levels (150G or equivalent). The leveling system after level 50 being changed is a good change, but I would argue that there should be no level cap rather than a level 350 cap, even if it's virtually impossible to get to the level cap right now, because on the off chance you do reach the level cap, you'll have zero incentive to keep playing. The 5 packs and 500G are a nice "we're sorry we didn't deliver our promises" gift.
Don't get me wrong: the changes announced are good. Really good. They really are a step towards the right direction regarding the game economy. But the system can still be improved and I believe the changes I proposed here (XP gained shown after each game and no level cap) can improved the system even more without even giving more resources. Always seeing our XP can give the feeling of "just one more game to level up" and no level cap rewards players who dedicate virtually all of their free time to the game (in case you're asking, I'm definitely NOT in that category).
I'm pretty sure you are doing something wrong with your life if you make it all the way to level 350 with the rewards as your only incentive for playing. You must either enjoy the game a heck of a lot to play it that much, or you should spend most of that time doing something else. Even the people who go AFK or use bots to maximise daily XP without actually playing are shooting themselves in the foot because it still costs power (and therefore money) to do that.
So yeah, the 350 level cap is really a non-issue.
My argument regarding the level cap isn't so much "what if you decide to spend time to reach that level cap", it's more on the line of "why is it there in the first place". It's the same reason I didn't really like the 10G/3wins 100G cap: why was it there? In fact, the 10G/3wins system was even worse; the probability of people spending 4 months playing the game to get max rewards in a full season is much smaller than the probability of people having one day without work/school/chores and spend that day playing HS.
I see the removal of the level cap as just extra candy for people trying to go pro or trying to stream the game full-time (a valid reason to spend 6-8 hours every day in HS and the only realistic people capable of reaching the level cap). Those are some of Blizzards main advertisers. Just give them the extra candy, even if they end up never using it (like Kibler, for example). There's no reason to have a level cap in this system the same way there was no reason to have the level cap in the system before.
Some numbers were dropped in the past, like was it 400/hr for ranked? Casual mode should be worth the same.
I don't know about any mode for 7 games, but I'd say, Arena, Duels, Tavern Brawl, Casual and Ranked. Maybe Battlegrounds, but I think it should require more effort than just queueing up 7 games against the Innkeeper and collecting your 2000 exp.
They dropped those numbers, 400XP for Ranked/Arena/Duels and 300XP for BG iirc. But I believe that's not enough: you don't play one hour worth of games for one hour, there's waiting periods between games, there's deck making/tweaking, there's accessing menus, there's bucket selections in Duels and so on. So, i believe simply showing how much XP you gain each game should add extra clarity. And you're right, Casual should give similar numbers.
And regarding the last paragraph, yes, I meant 7 wins in any PvP mode, forgot PvE and Practice aganst Innkeeper existed lol.
You mean like a popup after each game? I don't know if we need that, but at the very least Blizzard should say how much each mode gives. I don't see the need to try and track how much you get during a session, unless you want to verify the numbers.
That said, I played a few games of casual for my quest, then a few games of ranked. Both aggro decks, and one ranked game went a bit longer, but I checked how much exp. I had before and after each game, and averaged 30 for casual, and 45 for ranked.
Also, I'm glad my protest of logging in everyday and playing, but playing BADLY, has paid off.
I played one less game a day in protest, glad they noticed and took action!
uh oh - in that case I've been protesting since day 1 of playing the game.
