There has been some confusion surrounding the recent statement from Alec Dawson on the Hearthstone team and it's time to have a dedicated spot for some clarification. Earlier today, Alec tweeted that a note on Edwin rotating this year had missed the patch notes. This lead to the assumption, which includes us, that Edwin would be sent to the Hall of Fame. This is not the case.
- Edwin will be rotating this year.
- There are changes coming to gameplay and easing into playing with a limited collection.
- The Hall of Fame will no longer exist in its current form.
- There is no point in hoarding Edwin. There will be no benefit in doing so.
- Blizzard will announce details in the coming months.
Our bet on most information coming out will be next month during BlizzConline which takes place on February 19 & 20. Here's Alec's full clarification.
Quote From Alec Dawson Also sorry this didn't get into the notes but: Yes Edwin will still rotate later this year and yes we will be reverting the nerf (along with others) at that time.
Want to take a second to clarify our plan for Edwin VanCleef. There are big changes coming to Hearthstone in 2021. We aren’t quite ready to share the full details, but they will be positive changes for both gameplay and the ease of getting into the game with a limited collection.
As one small part of this, Edwin’s time in Standard will come to a close. However, Hall of Fame as it has existed will be no more. This means there is no additional benefit to crafting or hoarding extra Edwins today.
In the coming months, we’ll be sharing some more details about what the changes are and why you should be hyped for them no matter what type of player you are.

Best case scenario, this means that they are putting Classic into Wild and making a rotating "Core Set" whose cards are able to everyone for free while those cards are part of the Core Set (like how the Halloween event that added Wild cards to standard gave everyone a temporary free copy). Worst case, they're rotating all of classic and making a new classic set (and maybe giving players packs to compensate).
I'm all for your best case scenario. As a side effect, we could get a different reward from Tavern Brawls - even though I'm still missing some Classic Legendaries and Epics, those Classic packs just aren't very exciting.
LOL, like I said in the past, I don't think HoFed cards should be playable at all. I just hope it will happen.
HoFed cards is always problematic and doesn't fit class style, and this is not coming from me, since Devs already said somthing like this in the past.
Like it or not. It is what it is.
Its likely something close to card retirement, evergreen rotation, or an expansion of the basic set and complete removal of classic altogether.
Or perhaps its something scummy. They expand the expansion card pool and remove away classic. In that case standard will be more approachable to new players while also making it more expensive. Obviously this is perhaps the worst of the worst of what can happen, but as long as we're speculating, might as well make it clear that money making will likely be part of the equation.
Perhaps removing classic wouldn't be too bad. It makes each expansion more impactful, from legendaries to even the most mundane 1 drop.
This is where the cynical part of my head is going too, unfortunately.
Sooooo... Rotating Core Set?!?!
Likly not
More likly just new basic/classic set thas really really weak and this is done to screw playes out of dust cause thye dont wanna refuned like all of classic.
Even if there was benefit it was still better to dust and then recraft in gold right before hof rotation
Really depends on how desperate you are for dust. If not, then there's essentially no difference to not dusting. The only main benefit here is you get to craft a golden edwin for a discount, assuming you already have the regular, that's probably about it.
There is a difference... because of how HoF worked so far... with golden one you get 1600 extra dust, with regular one only 400 extra dust... so dusting regular one and crafting golden one might be worth... Of course HoF seems to be changing, but I see no reason to risk it.
It actually just occurred to me that if they remove that HoF as we know it, do we still get the dust back? Seems like a trivial thing to ask, but when Alec specifically mentioned "This means there is no additional benefit to crafting or hoarding extra Edwins today." it might indicate that the dust refunding might also be gone. Wouldn't want to risk it, honestly.
To me it sounds like, whatever they're doing to rotate Edwin, we are NOT going to get further dust compensation for it. I've dusted the card and won't re-craft it until I actually need it (probably never, by my preference).
I'm personally just going to keep him, but I have also played a lot more Wild in the past year than Standard. He's not particularly good in Wild, but we're also supposed to get another new game mode this expansion cycle. You never know, he may be a good viable option in that mode. I know I can always recraft later but... meh! I'm lazy!
not disenchanting nerfed legendaries. that must be the pinnacle of lazy.
Or I could just want to have as close to a full collection as possible? Because having more cards means having better options? Because not everyone plays Standard alone? Because the more cards you own, regardless of whether they are nerfed or not, means having a better time with the game?
I wonder what it could be?
I mean I dust him and then if he is still good for something I will craft him back with no dust lost... Why take the risk?
