We've got a brand new event in Hearthstone's Mercenaries game mode and it's here only for a limited-time! As you can see, these tasks are quite the mixed bag: while some are fairly simple to complete, others require more than a bit of thinking (and luck: that one's always welcome) and planning ahead.
Moreover, certain tasks clearly state that you need Comps consisting of Mercenaries belonging to specific races in order for your progresses to count: while the N'Zoth event was about Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and Murlocs, this time you'll need the help of Humans and Pirates!
Not all challenges might be as difficult as they seem at a glance: there are usually tips and tricks to be found to make everyone's lives easier. In this series of guides we'll take a look at how to complete each event Task, so that you'll be able to get your hands on all the rewards available. As of now, we'll focus our attention on the current task.
In case you missed them, if you click the banner below you'll have access to each of our task guides for this event.

How to Complete the "Fight Fire with Fire" Task from the Y'Shaarj Event
- Requirement: Complete N'zoth Bounty with N'Zoth in the party.
- Game Mode: Normal
- Rewards: 75 Y'Shaarj coins, 50 N'Zoth coins.
- Difficulty: 1/5
Let us rephrase the Fight Fire with Fire task's requirement for you: "Complete the N'Zoth Bounty. Also, N'Zoth has to be chilling on your bench." Moreover, we're talking about a Normal bounty, so yeah: this is going to be a piece of cake.
N'Zoth will appear on the board together with Psychus: these two units have specific interactions that will take place throughout the entire fight, but we'll get to them in a moment. First, aura effects and abilities.
N'Zoth is quite the unit: this character will be Immune to any form of damage as long as Psychus is on the board, meaning that you'll have to take down the latter in order to get to the former. But this is not all: even if you manage to kill Psychus, N'Zoth can always bring it back with Psychic Shell.
If this is not enough, you'll be pleased to know that N'Zoth has an aura that lets it summon two 15/15 Spawns with Rush at the start of each turn, which can be followed by either Mindgrasp, Mass Hysteria {0} or the aforementioned Psychic Shell - truly a powerful (but very slow) Old God!
N'Zoth's moveset.
Psychus, on the other hand, is rather easy to deal with: although it grants Immunity to N'Zoth, it has a Deathrattle that inflicts 50 damage to the Old God. We usually killed it in a turn, so Defile 3 is the only ability we were able to witness.
Psychus' (partial?) moveset.
In order to complete this bounty, you'll need at least one good Caster to deal with Psychus as soon a possible, so that you'll be able to focus on N'Zoth. Moreover, the Spawns are Immune while attacking, so a 15 damage AoE will be incredibly useful.
Suggested Comps
Here are a few Mercenaries parties you can use to complete the "Fight Fire with Fire" task. You'll be able to choose between many comps, suggested by different content creators, as well as mentions of budget alternatives for our readers that don't have many Legendary Mercs in their collection.
Out of Cards Recommendation - Fire Comp
Fight Fire with Fire? Yes, literally. The Fire comp is acknowledged for being the best when it comes to PvE grind, and we decided to put it to yet another test.
To prove this comp of being fit for this task, we actually recorded a video showing you that you can pull this off with ease.
Here are a few tips for those unfamiliar with this strategy.
- Both the climbing and the final fight trio is Balinda Stonehearth-Baron Geddon-Ragnaros.
- In the video I abused the Caster buffs, so during the final fight I decided to swap Rag for Chi-Ji, but the final result stayed the same.
- Spam Fire abilities with all three Mercenaries, incinerating most opponents in the first turn of the match.
- Chi-Ji (another Fire-heavy Merc) acts as 4th man in the rare cases you want to swap out one of the three main characters, but it never happened to us until the very end (and for the aforementioned reason).
- Cookie, the Cook made the cut because of the additional Health buff granted by [Hearthstone Card (Appetizers 4) Not Found].
- N'Zoth never left the bench and no Mercenary died throughout any stage of the bounty.
Out of Cards Budget Recommendation - Nature Comp
"Are you beating N'Zoth all by yourself? No I am with the Nature Bros!" (semiquote)
To prove this comp of being fit for this task, we actually recorded a video showing you that you can pull this off with ease. As you'll see, we got rid of N'Zoth in two turns and closed the deal in three - it may be budget, but the Nature comp slaps hard.
- Climb and final fight trio is Cookie, the Cook/Lady Anacondra-Guff Runetotem-Bru'kan.
- Anacondra is better against Casters or when there are many Fighters, as they'll tend to target Cookie.
- Get as many Nature Spell Damage buffs as possible, as they'll power up your entire comp.
- No matter what it takes: you always need to activate Guff's Living Brambles 1's Nature Combo - it's just that good.
- Yu'lon is a Rare Protector with some Nature synergy: that's why it's in the team. Also, we needed a 6th Merc and we didn't know what to include.
- Just like for the Fire comp, N'Zoth is not necessary to your gameplan.
Other Resources
Our clever community members set up a forum thread to share your Mercenaries progression journey, and we have added an #mercenaries channel on our Discord server if you want to talk with others in real-time. If you need an assist, you can also respond to this guide and we'll do our best to help you out; the comments are also a great way to share your own comps that you've used to complete the task above.
Good luck taking on any of these Bounties for those sweet sweet coins or just for the sake of satisfying completion!
Comments
I didn't realize how much Mass Hysteria can wreck your mercs if you have a few with high attack. You should really stick to only spell casters.
Man-o-man, I am simply having bad luck on this quest. :(
If you keep failing, my suggestion is to stop playing the mode for a couple hours and then come back with your mind a bit rested.
Sometimes we all make mistakes out of stress, which make us even more tilted.
I can guarantee you that Fight Fire with Fire is manageable, so you only need some luck!
Thanks for the encouragement. I took a break, tried again (twice!) and after losing two key heroes, I got dumb lucky with the boss battle, completing the quest. Chi-Ji was MVP!
Thanks for the guides!
Perhaps not the ideal place to ask this question, but... my Baine Bloodhoof's Chain Heal is "healing" for zero. For a few usages it was healing for one health per tick, now I get the animation and the chaining effect but no healing. Is anyone else seeing this?
Also, the "Secrets of the Naga" treasure is either incredibly bugged or has incredibly misleading text. When I choose it as a treasure, it only affects one of my naga-- and when they take damage, it jumps to a different naga, or a different merc altogether if I have no other naga, only it doesn't do anything if it jumps to a non-naga and just sorta... dissipates? It's weird.
Also also, the game sometimes forgets the order it's supposed to do things in if there's a combo involved, or if one of the involved mercs has taunt, or sometimes if I changed the order of my moves, or sometimes just because.
It's been a bit of a rough patch, is what I'm saying.
This should make you a bit happier.
Just wanted to add that psychus' deathrattle also affects your nzoth. Funny, that interaction.
I didn't know that - neat!
