Update: Blizzard has confirmed Caverns of Time will be present for at least the first 3 seasons in Twist. Our article has been updated to reflect this.
Twist has finally arrived! After a brief debut back in July for a beta test, Hearthstone's newest format replaces Classic with an ever-evolving mode that will have a new "twist" each new season - but seasons aren't always going to be monthly! This could be a simple change of the card sets, specifically curated lists of cards, or special rules that could change the way Hearthstone works at its core.
The first season, Wonders, makes use of the new straight-to-wild Caverns of Time set and brings back the following sets that are legal for the format:
- Curse of Naxxramas
- Goblins vs Gnomes
- Blackrock Mountain
- The Grand Tournament
- League of Explorers
- Whispers of the Old Gods
- One Night in Karazhan
- Mean Streets of Gadgetzan
- Caverns of Time
- Legacy
This first set features a ton of old expansions which effectively makes this a Classic+ which is something players were asking for during the reign of the Classic format.
When Does Twist Wonders End?
Wonders is set to end at the end of September on the 30th. A new season is expected to be announced towards the end of the month with the meta taking a shakeup starting on October 1.
New Card Pack - Caverns of Time
With the new Caverns of Time set, which is not available in Standard, comes a brand new card pack. 34 brand new cards and 113 reprinted buffed cards make up the set that is currently only available in the Wild and Twist formats. It should be noted that if you aren't sure about playing Wild in the future, the Caverns of Time set is not likely to always be available in Twist which makes the question of "is it worth it" questionable. At the very least, we know the first three seasons of Twist will feature the set.
If you don't have many of the older cards that were a part of the buffed portion of the cards available in Caverns of Time, there can be some pretty decent value in picking up some older staple cards. If you do have a lot of those cards though, buying a few packs can be a very easy way to pick up all the new cards... though you'll likely want to spend dust on crafting the legendaries because there are a whopping seven new legendary cards.
Note that Demon Hunter and Death Knight are not available in the Twist format and as such do not have cards in the Caverns of Time set.
Card packs still have their normal pricing, and golden packs are available as well if you're feeling particularly indulgent.
Twist's Wonderful Battle-Ready Decks
There are a handful of new battle-ready decks available in the in-game shop providing you with an easy way to drop into the format. They can be picked up for gold or real money and come in two different forms - regular and lite. The lite decks don't feature as many legendary cards.
What are you planning on playing in Twist?
Comments
Sorry guys but I don't agree with C'Thun opinions of you.
I mean, I can't deny that C'thun decks are good for climbing and they are effective but it is not fun if you ask me, especially after the long standard ladder with Sire Denathrius and Astalor Bloodsworn. It doesn't feel good to lose to same mechanic in a 2 year period and both cards are still ending games in standard.
I don't think that the focus of the Caverns of Time is the right decision. This mechanic is overly used in Hearthstone in latest times already.
Don't get me wrong, I know I am able to play bunch of other effective decks and I'm happy with Twist's current meta. There are a lot of options for me other than C'thun decks but it still haunts me to experience the same finisher again and again for 2 years.
Got on to the old murloc pally OTK build. Pretty solid so far.
Kinda shocking to remember that these was during a time in hearthstone where things are so much slower. I keep expecting my minions to not stick for more than the turn they are played.
The fact that a pally OTK build with no immunity and limited healing can actually last more than 10 turns without dying is incredible considering that in standard you'd probably die in half that time nearly every game.
You can try some Big paladin with Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound and Redemption + Getaway Kodo. N'Zoth, the Corruptor is a good addition with Sludge Belcher, Sylvanas Windrunner and Chillmaw etc.
Not the best deck but at least it is not a total loss if you ask me.
I know right ! I was being silly with good old mill rogue and I am shocked that how I last more than 10 turns on some games unless there is a pirate warrior.
More than that, I can finally feel like playing a mid-range deck with Dragon Priest. I realized that mid-range in hearthstone's standard currently in a bad position. Battleground clustering is not a thing in standard anymore. Thanks to twist i can experience this thing again.
Really enjoying Twist so far (aside from the duplicate protection fail). Been playing with Zeddy's Jade Rogue and definitely have to say, Jade Telegram alone has won me a few games, especially against C'thun decks. Just shuffling that C'thun back in deck on the 9th turn is just glorious.
I like C'Thun quite a lot, and Jade Shaman too, but now's probably the best opportunity I have to flash my fancy golden N'Zoth, the Corruptor. Just...don't know what to do with it lol
Well, for instance, you could play some Jade Shaman ^^
Really enjoying this, even spent my gold on packs and will buy the miniset with money. I got one of the old legendaries from them, but I do not feel bad about it.
Update, Blizzard has confirmed Caverns of Time will be present for at least the first 3 seasons in Twist.
I hope the next Caverns of Time-type set includes legacy cards for Demon Hunter and Death Knight. I don't remember if Martian or Regis said this, but I would kill to get a KotFT Demon Hunter hero card and a Galakrond for Death Knight.
I definitely feel like we can't be too far off DH and DK getting added into the Twist mix, even if its briefly for a season here and there. The opportunity to get both of these classes a round of new cards is simply too great and it makes it a lot easier to incorporate them into future bits of content that may otherwise not feel a fair.
I just hope that a Frozen Throne Demon Hunter hero isn't as overpowered as some of the ones back in the day lol
Feels good to be able to play Renolock and Dragon Priest again, even if they aren't the best decks out there. Now if only the format didn't remind me of my jade druid ptsd.
Feels way faster than Old Gods Meta back then.
Still I am able to climb with my Jade-C`Thun-Rogue so far.
No strong deck, but I have fun at the moment.
Glad to hear you're having fun! This was one of my favourite metas back in the day and might need to squeeze some games in to relive a bit of the memories. So much Jade!
