Hearthpwn was REALLY slow. The client side scripts were slow, but the server side stuff was also hellishly slow.
Please don't add any features that would cause this site to run as slowly as Hearthpwn.
Won't be an issue. If we add stuff that needs more processing power, we'll spin up more power. The goal is to keep things as lean as possible while having a rich set of features.
HearthPwn's main problem is it is using a horrible codebase that is relatively ancient. People not being given the opportunity to improve said code meant all the sites running on it were shit-tastic. We're building from the ground up to make sure stuff is as fast as possible and not relying on shit tech.
It's going to take us longer but the end result will be a feature-rich community that can actually grow and flourish. The HearthPwn solution was to throw money at the problem as the site became more problematic to run as far as backend performance was concerned.
I've actually been sitting on this data a while, there was however a performance concern with getting it onto the site. Hours were spent reworking some backend stuff to make it so performant which is why there was a large lack of updates / news today on Out of Cards.
Time for sleep, back on the work train bright and early today (Saturday). Woot woot!
Issue has been fixed and is in the process of being deployed. Sorry about that, a ninja deploy last night wasn't fully up to date with the proper changes on our url routing for those pages.
Looks like our HTTP -> HTTPS rewrites weren't working so you loaded the non-secure version of the website. That's been fixed though so there should no longer be any CORS issues. Thanks for the report (and including the url where it happened!)
As someone who isn't a BIG MTG player, but does play it occasionally and is interested in getting into it more, I have actually considered getting MTG: Arena. It looks really cool and faithful to the original game and it would probably help me learn more about it.
I must ask though, how is the F2P experience for you guys? I've heard both ends of the spectrum before.
I'm definitely not free to play in MTGA, but from what I can tell, the experience is better than Hearthstone.
I did a sponsored stream with Wizards back when they created their new "character progression" system and the unlock pace felt good, the decks performed decently on the ladder (I'm certain can be modified a bit to get even better), and in the end you get quite a few cards. From just the new player perspective, there should be hours of enjoyment without spending a dime.
It also feels more rewarding to go through your daily wins and quest progression. Getting random cards after you get past a certain number of wins is also super cool. I don't know if there is a certain pool they can come from but free cards is always great.
I'm not sure about the whole card crafting system though. It feels better than Hearthstone since you accumulate "wild cards" to turn into whatever card you desire but on paper it may be worse. There is no disenchanting so you have to keep all the cards you will never end up playing with which I know for some F2P players in Hearthstone, that could be an issue.
I definitely recommend giving it a shot though when you're feeling bored and not interested in Hearthstone.
Thanks to Chimera for finalizing all our card changes by patch. These display both on patch pages (example) and on card pages like Archivist Elysiana.
Sticky Threads
We now finally support stickies on the forums!
We're taking a slightly different approach with them - stickies show up at the top of every forum page in a particular category.
Support the Site
Added a box on the homepage to the bottom of the sidebar for easy access to different ways you can support the site, letting us remain free of ads. <3
Changes
Profiles have received a very basic overhaul to support "pages" of profile content. More to come.
Locked threads no longer appear in recent, active, and new thread listings.
Bug Fixes
Members who have filled out their bio field in their account management can now see their bio on their profile page.
Mobile users now have links to account management, sign out, and profile in the nav. This looks absolutely horrible and we'll fix it when the whole top bar gets redone. Sooner rather than later.
I don't agree that "duplicate" decks should not be allowed. You end up with a problem then of the person that creates it first dictates how it evolves on the site, at least without a crazy amount of moderation.
The reason the has guides filter exists is to help combat "junk" decks. There are plans for more tools to help people find actual useful content and there will be incentives for people to make good guides. Another thing we currently have is all decks start at zero. If a deck creator really wants to share their deck and let others see it, they're more likely to upvote their own deck. Adding in filters later on that allow users to hide decks with less than a certain score are on the to do list.
Ultimately, people should be allowed to use the site to share their decks and keep a record of decks they enjoyed playing. I think HearthPwn did a very good job with that, it just needs more powerful filters to let people find good content easier. Content discovery is going to be big here instead of simply deck discovery. One thing that will help with this is showcasing related decks on deck pages with a a preference given to decks with guides. We'll also end up having a way for staff, and maybe select community members, to be able to "star" decks to flag them as recommended to the community for having outstanding content.
I would like to eventually support two themes on the site, one dark, one light. Possibly even more down the line as some form of "premium" supporter feature.
That isn't going to happen for a while though since it sets us back from work on larger features. I have built the site with it in mind though so when we do get around to it, it won't be too crazy to add in.
With so much board clear in the game, I find Soul of the Murloc invaluable in my Murloc Shaman deck and as Scarifar says, not every class can clear two boards in a row like Warrior can. The card is way too handy to get rid of with stuff like Murloc Warleader a potential draw away post-activation. Won plenty of games with that nonsense :D
We will have site achievements. No timeline yet though. I do want them to be even better than the ones Pwn had.
No compendium stuff for Rise of Shadows, we don't have enough data here on Out of Cards and the HearthPwn stuff broke. We will, however, have a new compendium here on OOC and it'll be even better since we can do cool stuff with l33t programmingz0r.
Really though, it'll just be automatically generated in full and we can give people more in-depth stat snapshots of expansions.
Hello, could you change the C in Crush to a K so it's spelled like the card? KingKrush. If you can put a space between King and Krush thanks would be cool. It wouldn't let me when I created my account.
Going to get Unknown labels added for each of the classes which should help with this.
If there are some mainstream archetypes we are missing though, we can very easily add them onto the site for people to make use of.

We'll get this in. Definitely very important to have password changing.

100% going to happen. And it will be properly updated and not a disaster like the manual HearthPwn one.
We will have an Innkeeper alternative available in the future. Due to us having a few threads on this, I'm locking the thread.

Looks like someone ninja edited it on me. Thanks and sorry about that!
Definitely going to get something up for this. I always enjoyed our Streams & Videos forum.
I also want to help content creators in other ways too through their profiles, that's something for down the line though!

Gonna have to dig deeper. Will keep you posted.

Bit of an oversight you can't get to profile management on mobile. I'll get it fixed!
