Best Cards from United in Stormwind?

Submitted 3 years, 3 months ago by

With the new expansion drawing closer and all the cards revealed, what do you guys think are the best cards from UiS, or ones that will see lots of play? What are the sleepers and potentially broken cards of the set? I'll start:

Defend the Dwarven District - Even before seeing this in play in the theorycrafting streams, people were already predicting this to be really strong, and it is. Very easy to complete too; opponents are gonna have to race it down or tank up in order to avoid the inevitable.

Entitled Customer - Just a ridiculous board clear. Any Control Warlock deck in standard and wild will definitely run this.

Alliance Bannerman - This is a card that will boost handbuff decks. You draw a minion, buff all minions in your hand, and you stick a 2/2 body on board.

Voidtouched Attendant - If Shadow Priest becomes a thing, this 1-drop with premium stats will enable some OTKs.

Battleground Battlemaster - A scary card that will be run in board-centric decks.

Overdraft - Can unlock some burst damage for Shaman, especially in Wild.

Bolner Hammerbeak - Nerf candidate, has the potential to terrorize Wild. This could enable some OTKs.

Fun cards that I don't think will be competitive:

Raid the Docks - I love the flavor of this questline, but I'm not sure what kind of deck you can build around this. Maybe a control deck? Either way, I'm still crafting this for fun as a Warrior main.

The Demon Seed - I watched Regis play this, and it looks incredibly fun. Balancing between life and death all game, then ultimately killing your opponent in fatigue just looks so satisfying. That said, this probably won't stand a chance against aggro decks.

    Here's some of the best cards in my opinion, I won't go on to elaborate because its fairly obvious why they're on top here;

    - Ignite, First Flame, Alliance Bannerman, Garrote, Bolner Hammerbeak, Canal Slogger, Provoke, Varian, King of Stormwind

    Here's my list of sleeper hits;

    - Devouring Swarm: Its reload, it allows for some initiative, its 0 mana. Face hunter is currently already playing resizing pouch, which can easily get this card. If this connects with Trampling Rhino for a 2nd hit and another rhino in hand, there's no doubt that face hunter will make it upwards.

    - First Blade of Wrynn: Handbuff paladin will be tops. And this card will easily make the cut. To be honest, even without the rush trigger Id still need to be first convinced why this card isn't just an instant include into all forms of paladin.

    - Auctionhouse Gavel: It just occurred to me that any form of combo with bolner will likely run this one just to get out the combo earlier than it should. No one is expecting this to ever be good enough, and for merely being playable this card has exceeded my expectations.

    - Encumbered Pack Mule: I have a good feeling we'll be seeing plenty of this card in the next expansion. In hunter, this card is just so much value and goes well with stuff like Stormwind Piper on 3, Scavenger's Ingenuity, Warsong Wrangler. It'll fit into handbuff and handlock for sure. Its taunt, its value, and its a respectable statline for a 2 drop.

    - Battleground Battlemaster: Its so niche but when it works it'll win the game for you. If stealth rogue comes back it'll be on this card's back.

    Honorable mentions:

    - Mo'arg Forgefiend: Will likely be one of the best 8 drops to be printed in this expansion.

    - Deeprun Engineer: Current mech pool in neutrals is extremely small so that's something worth mentioning. Funny thing is, if handlock is 30% of the meta, then this card will instantly give you the best counter card available: Clockwork Giant. In all other cases, Darkmoon Dirigible is still a decent follow up to this honestly.

    - Lady Prestor: Slot 3/4s of your quest paladin deck with 1 drops and then play this card on 6. What could possibly go wrong?

    - Rustrot Viper and Royal Librarian - Its a tech card, so it really doesn't ever deserve to be called 'best'. But for flexibility, and for the fact that its basically countering two of the most common things in hearthstone, it'll deserve a mention by me if nothing else.

I agree with all of Dapperdog's takes except for the shaman cards he picked. Canal Slogger seems great though.

My personal sleeper card is Sanctum Chandler for the synergy it has Ignite. After some set up and clearing the spells from your deck, you can burst your opponent down to zero easily. It reminds me a lot of OTK mage in wild, and god do I hate that deck.

For Wild, since that's my main mode

    • DH has received nothing for Odd DH aside from Sigil of Alacrity, and I frankly don't know if they need that card. Control DH seems better, but still lacks a win con, unless we want to pretend King Togwaggle DH will be a thing, which may just be seeing how much the draw archetype has been pushed this expansion. Now find me a way to play Azalina Soulthief wtihout running Emperor Thaurissan... oh wait, Skull of Gul'dan.
    • Oracle of Elune will be lowkey busted in wild with Celestial Alignment, which could reignite Malygos decks. Vibrant Squirrel and Composting also seem to try and help Aggro Druid, alongside Oracle.
    • Defend the Dwarven District will be Hunter's biggest hope to be a better class in Wild. I do not think it will be strictly for full Spell deck despite the support Hunter got from Kobolds, as Hunter still likely needs sustain, so back to Vicious Scalehide and whatnot.
    • Sanctum Chandler with Ignite and Hot Streak gives me hope for a new Minion Mage deck, because you will be able to use all these cards with 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for an OTK. Meanwhile, Clumsy Courier will free Reno Pocket Galaxy Mage from the dragon package, though will still be preferred because of being active on turn 6.
    • Rise to the Occasion could give a late game win condition for Odd Paladin, and that deck is already strong enough because of its ability to rush you down. However, playing the Quest itself is a slow play, so it could probably create a new Odd Paladin branch focused on more control.
    • Wouldn't be surprised to see Seek Guidance possibly overtake current Reno Priest's win condition. It's just much easier to complete, and it still benefits from Lorekeeper Polkelt.
    • Garrote maybe for Shuffle and Aggro Rogue, but nothing new for Odd and Kingsbane.
    • Shaman still enjoys its current place, but I could see Auctionhouse Gavel in Shudderwock decks to either reduce the cost of him or his pieces.
    • New tools for Even Warlock and a never ending debate whether or not to include the new Quest in Darkglare Warlock - it adds burst damage, but hurts your Molten Giant turns because of lifesteal.
    • Hayday for Pirate Warrior, and the new Quest could be included in Control Warrior variant, possibly Odd or DMH. Also Remote-Controlled Golem gains power with Dr. Boom, Mad Genius. And Heavy Plate seems to be a solid candidate to replace Bring It On! in Dead Man's Hand lists - 2 less armor and 1 mana more expensive, but no side effect to boost your opponent.
    • Mo'arg Forgefiend could find a place in Cube Warlock, and again even-Cost cards tailor-made for Even Warlock. Maybe some OTK potential with Battleground Battlemaster?

I fear we are about to get shot down over and over by facetard hunters. As more lose to it they will join it's rank turning hearthstone into the stupidest meta to date.

I agree with a lot of the cards listed already so I'll add just one sleeper pick:

    SI:7 Skulker

It's not strong on its own, but I fear it's one of those cards that limits the design space of future expansions (while in Standard).  By that I mean it'll always be lurking skulking in the corner ready to make an inherently strong card/combo busted when you can tutor it (or if there's ever a cheap battlecry draw minion for Bolner Hammerbeak to exploit).

I personally feel Defend the Dwarven District is really overrated, it will probably be a good tier 2/3 deck until it gets more support from the miniset. Same with Battleground Battlemaster, because seriously, when has Windfury ever worked out (except the Doomhammer)

I think people are really sleeping on the Paladin quest as well as the handbuff variants of it. They just need some tweaks like a bit more draw and proactive stuff like Broomsticks to really pop off.

This ain't no place for a hero

Hunter quest is never really going to be tier 1 simply because long games and hunter just never do well, ever. The only hope for it is that the meta is really slow enough, so it can go full value without getting destroyed midgame.

Battleground Battlemaster is a 5/5 for 5 that's a massive soft taunt and instantly makes any minion game winners. You can just slot in 1 in stealth rogue, and outside of a few decks its really not easy getting rid of minions like Burrowing Scorpid, which can deal 10 damage on turn 5 if left alive, leaving a 5/2 and 5/5 on board. We'll just have to see how the meta forms, but I still think its a relevant inclusion into aggro decks.

Is anyone really sleeping on handbuff paladin? Alliance Bannerman itself is already the best card of the set. Its likely going to be tier 1 on the first few weeks in my opinion.

Corpsetaker in Even paladin was a tier 1 deck and used as a crutch to close out game against control decks early on. But yeah, generally windfury not great in standard.

I'm coming around to this opinion as well with the Hunter quest. The payoff is incredibly powerful, but the class's scarcity of card draw would hold it back. It's still going to be competitive, but not a really broken deck (unless the meta becomes too slow, which seems unlikely).

Well i cannot speak for Wild because i only play standard - there are some cards that we will see a lot of like:

Ignite, First Flame, Garrote and at least at the start of the expansion Elwynn Boar for example :)

Defend the Dwarven District and Bolner Hammerbeak are my top 2 Picks that we will see a lot of and could be potential nerf candidates. Both seem pretty strong and at least Hunter Questline Performed more than well in the Theory Crafting Streams. Bolner made the list because of the potential OTK.

Challenge me ... when you're ready to duel a god!
