DoD First Impressions Thread

Titles says it all, share your first impressions with the decks you got.

I tried Treant Druid. It honestly looks incredibly solid, although not insane. The main problem is still card draw but Aeroponics is a good foundation. Currently trying Cult Master, but maybe Overflow is the way to go. Goru is actually just great, he does so much for your lategame pressure. Also a deck for Keeper Stalladris finally.

Galakrond Priest seems....weird. The lack of card draw makes running any combos kind of moot (although I still think going Wretched Reclaimer + Grave Rune with the added discount from Fate Weaver is the best idea). The Hero power is just pretty crazy late game as it turns you into basically Deathstalker Rexxar except your deck is loaded with removal. Healing is a bit of an issue, but Sandhoof Waterbearers or Khartut could help (with the aforementioned Wretched Reclaimer and Grave Rune combo)

Sad to say Desert Obelisk is not an unbeatable win conditions, you all must be heartbroken.

Galakrond Warrior is really weird. I treid going control with big taunts, which isn't bad, but the Galakrond turn itself is impossibly slow. He's practically unplayable before fully upgrading because you need the claw to at least get some kind of tempo. If you do play him and live however, he's crazy good. Most decks can't deal with 7/10 Tomb Wardens or even just a 5/6 Eternium Rover. Maybe going tempo galakrond is better and just try to get some chargers from the battlecry to finish your opponent next turn.

Played against one Pirate Warrior, thought I beat him, but the weapon spam (and my lack of non-face removal) eventually got me killed. Still not convinced about that deck, it seems incredibly draw dependant and if you don't get a crazy Skybarge turn you basically rely on being able to sm0rc your opponent down with weapons and Leeroy.

Anyways, share your stories so we can all get a better picture of what'S going on out there.

I tried my goofy meme Transmogrifier + Plot Twist Warlock deck and - hold onto your hats - a handful of random, unrelated Legendaries is not in fact actually good. The "combo" isn't all that hard to pull off though and definitely faster than just using Arch-Villain Rafaam

Galakrond Rogue has been okay - I've had some tough matches with really bad draws so a little early to really say. the ability to get multiple uses from Kronx Dragonhoof with all the bounce/double battlecry stuff in Rogue is definitely a strong play.

Dragon Paladin (Highlander or otherwise) is, as many expected, incredibly strong.

I could only construct a Galakrond Rogue for now; It seems promising but need to say that I had some issues with drawing/generating. My hand overflowed almost in every game and Couldn't use Galakrond correctly to get those 0 cost cards because of my huge handsize. Lackeys are everywhere and generates so much cards. why i don't know but I couldn't get kobold titanic or the other that evolves. I only get generators. Damn we were so crowded. It needs some tweaking tho.

and I almost got my paladin collection full, will try it next, played a game only with I could draw Nozdormu and its impact was huge, after dropping it on turn 4 I finished a highlander mage in next turn. Probably I was so lucky and It will be bad in time because everyone will learn to use Dragonmaw Poacher.

First try was a very greedy Waxadred Galakrond Rogue which is not very good (surprise!). It's veh hard to figure out the correct amount of draw and removal.

Second I tried Pirate Warrior which looks very strong. Very good win rate from rank 10 to 8. Then got destroyed by a Quest Galakrond Shaman. Only encounter so far, but this looks completely broken. Gonna try that next tomorrow.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

So far, I've only had a chance to play 5 games of Quest Galakrond Shaman. I'll copy over my first thoughts from the guide.

    Quest to Unleash the Tempest

Faceless Corruptor is broken (save you extra copies of this one lads. This card is going to get nerfed. 10/8 in stats on T5 is ridiculous. If your opponent leaves a single minion on the board for you on T4, the game is over)

Dragonmaw Poacher is going to make this a Big Game Hunter meta

Nithogg is probably going to receive the axe very quickly. If the eggs hatched normally as well if broken by the opponent, it would be good. But I played him in both my games (with double battlecry) and not a single egg hatched. UPDATE: I finally had eggs hatch, and it was game ending. If your opponent can't clear the eggs, you basically win. Plus he is a good Mutate target.

If possible, try turn into Galakrond BEFORE completing Corrupt the Waters. Double Battlecry is a much more powerful HP to have. Even games that I have drawn him, I didn't use him. Invoking Galakrond is an amazing way to maintain board control.

Dragon's Pack is very powerful, but so far, I think it's good at running only 1 copy.

Mutate continues to be problematic. There are more good targets for it now too. Try and hit: Mogu Fleshshaper (obviously), Nithogg or Corrupt Elementalist

I haven't hit ladder but my buddies have and they all say the same thing: quest Galakrond shaman is game-breakingly OP.

I'm hoping that opinion changes by the time I get to play later tonight.

Waxadred rouge is great, no need for lackeys or some super dragon. Card draw the same as rouges always do and always mulligan for him and togwaggles scheme

I have mostly played with a slight refinement to the Galakrond rogue deck recipe, which looks like a solid starting point for a deck. I had a few clunky draws in the early game but lackeys are pretty good at helping catch up.

The Questing Adventurers really earned their places in the deck, and were the primary use for the coins from Umbral Skulker. Otherwise the coins were rarely super helpful in this deck, especially as I rarely invoked twice early enough for them to lead to massive tempo plays. They do have one neat feature though: Kronx + Galakrond costs 13 mana, so if you hold onto them while waiting to draw one of these, you can really speed things up.

I'm planning on trying a big combo Galakrond deck, where I expect the Umbral Skulkers to be more important.

Pirate warrior has been a blast to play. In wild you are able to have 4 cannons and 3 patches, it is hilarious.

Highlander dragon mage rides the value train at full Speed. You can both clear and generate big boards. The new malygos is bonkers. Alexstrasza is totally broken. Sometimes you even get a second Ally for 0 mana!

I would bet that this deck will see play in the future. Not that easy to optimize but we will get there.

Unpopular oppinion: Pure galakrond shaman is stronger than quest-galakrond shaman! You easily push them off the board. Same thing with pirate warrior

I actually agree with you about Shaman. With Quest is fun, but the 2 playstyles clash a bit. I'm going for full Galakrond token next:

Enjoying it so far (despite playing nearly exclusively joke decks)

    I've played:

Albatross/Waxadred Rogue - Not good, but brilliant to pull off. The Waxadred build is by far the strongest, but managing to put 20+ Albatrosses in your opponents deck is hilarious.

Paladin Paladin - Better than expected. Lightforged Zealot continues to impress, while Lightforged Crusader can provide a little too much value at times. The meta will settle and eat this alive, but it's a fun idea, and plays better than I thought it would.

Gala/Dragon Warrior - Now this has impressed me. Scion of Ruin is disgusting, and Smolderthorn Lancer provides a nice reply to Dragonmaw Poacher

    In Wild:

Embiggen Egg Druid - Embiggen, as a lot of people suggested, is Keleseth on Steroids. If you draw it in the Mulligan, you win. If you don't....meh. I need to refine this deck, and make it work if Embiggen doesn't show up.

Albatross Priest - Making Renolocks cry since 2019. My record is 36 birds shuffled so far. So what if it loses to literally every other deck?

It seems to be turning into mostly Pirate Warrior and Zoolock. Typical day 1 aggro decks starting to set the meta. Time to counter them bois!

PW in wild is definitely A LOT stronger. It's a tad concerning.

Currently trying Cult Master, but maybe Overflow is the way to go. Goru is actually just great, he does so much for your lategame pressure. Also a deck for Keeper Stalladris finally.

I'm currently 5-1 with the deck. My only loss was to Aggro-Galakrond Warrior. I pulled off 0-1 mana Aeroponics in all the matches. I even pulled off the double Aeroponics after playing Forest's Aid + 0 mana Anubisath Defender.

    ******************************

I finished the night 11-4 with the deck. I lost against Highlander Mage, Highlander Hunter and Tending Tauren treant Druid along with the Aggro Warrior. Overall, I'm 2-1 vs Druid and Hunter while I went 3-0 against Shaman. The only Class I didn't play with my Ent deck was Paladin but I feel like I will get plenty of Pala action in the days to come.

I feel like the 9 new cards make the deck better than the previous edition. I include Dendrologist as new cards because I excluded him from my old deck. His effect came into play at the earliest turn 4 but I rather Garden Gnome. Now with Treenforcements & Shrubadier I can play Den on turn 2. The only card that I miss from the deck is BEEEES!!! but there is no room in the deck cries.

First thing I tried was a Highlander-Dragon-Galkrond-Priest... Wasn't really good. Compared to wild Razakus-Priest, you really lack boardclear and heal. Card draw/generation was fine though.

Then I tried pure Galakrond-Priest and I won about half of my games (won against every Mage, one Waxadred-Rogue but had a pretty tough time against shaman an warrior). The HP is just like Deathstalker Rexxars:It wins you the lategame. As it turns out, heal and infinite big Minions is preeeeeettyyyy goooooood!

I also play Murozond the Infinite in this Deck, and he's actually better than I thought. Cause, you know, he copys your Opponents turn, and they usually try to have a GOOD turn. The best Thing that happend:  Opponent plays Dragonqueen Alexstrasza, clears my board with the Maly-Flamestrike and plays 2 other 8-8s (Pocket Galaxy) .Than BOOM. Murozond hits the board, I clear his entire Board AND develop multiple 8-8s.

Played a few things. In my opinion Glakrond quest shaman is the strongest. It generates huge boards over and over and over again. The double invokes keep the board under control early. I only lost to perfect curve aggro warrior with a terrible starting hand. I took it from from Rank 8 to 4 in a bit over an hour. I also like highlander dragon mage. Super fun and can hold its own. I tried a bit of pirate warrior and gave it up after a few games because my draw was too inconsistent. Will be trying Galakrond dragon warrior next I think.

Opened all the warrior galakrond cards (including kronx) so I tried rush warrior with galakrond taking off all the filler/MEH cards from said deck (seriously, the deck from SOU had many weak/situational cards)

The card draw and reach from galakrond is JUST what the deck was lacking, won every game where my opponents didn't had the god hand went from rank 12 to 7 (didn't play much lately so got there..).

The copy dragon is strong, but I only got one copy, and tbh it's probably too inconsistent to run 2.

Funnily enough I consider running deviant maniac cause it's a rush minion and it's cheaper than shield of galakrond.. But I didn't yet because I am not sold on it.

Also you don't have to fully invoke him to play him, if I have it on 7 I just play it, the hero power is great.

I played dragon hunter and it's really fun. i'm suprised that Skyfin is actually alright in the deck and having unlimited charges with Stormhammer is also really good.

I'm a bit disappointed that games tend to end fast (between turn 6-8). I thought i might need Veranus but it turns out i don't need it.Frizz Kindleroost is also super helpful

overall i really like dragon hunter and i will play it for a very long time

Lightning Breath is pretty damn good, this card is probably the only reason to play shaman dragon deck if it ever exists, excellent removal spell.

Squallhunter is okay, but not auto included in many decks unless standard format does benefit from it, which I won’t be playing that for a while.

Though I can’t wait to see many refined decks for shaman, looks like I won’t get bored from playing this class again.

I am in love with Treant Druid (Aggro Wild version): micro-synergies and anti-synergies with Garden Gnome, Aeroponics and Living Mana make it extremely exciting to play. And fairly good.

Even Hunter feels meta-viable. I might include double Rat Trap.

Quest Mage improved, and might finally rise as anti-Control, having a slightly better Aggro matchup now.

Ancharrr may be better than i thought in Wild PW: maybe slower start, but literally explosive onslaught. It could seriously revive the deck, and i am tempted to craft it.

These two things could actually weaken Secret Mage: they will be forced to choose between anti-Aggro and anti-Control builds. Players will still play it alot, until they find out it's not so straightforward anymore, and eventually drop in numbers towards a more varied meta... Or maybe not.

I am still trying to figure out a smart build for Embiggen and/or Breath of Dreams Druid, but i feel these archetypes are still too raw, and lack some serious support (ie consistency and/or some clear wincondition), especially in Wild. Delaying board development for raw stats just doesn't feel good enough. I can't even get past the theorycraft process.

Have been fiddling around with Quest Hunter by now.

Diving Gryphon is extremely valuable (as expected) and Veranus puts in some decent work as well (even if she is a bit clunky to get value from consistently)

Miracle Rogue looks threatening. Fought against one who emptied their deck with Myra's Unstable Element, refilled it with like 20 Malygos, drew four 0-cost Malygos via Galakrond's battlecry then proceeded to play Sinister Strike and Eviscerate for a total of 50+ face damage.

    Well it's over

Beat you to death with big bodies combined with even more self-heals. There's just too many stats, especially if you get off even a single Dragon Speaker

Personally I've been playing Ramp Dragon Druid + Embiggen...

Lost 2/12 games! If you manage to get Embiggen a dragon and get early Breath of Dreams x2, you're set.

Strength in Numbers is crazy, pulling a 8/16 Ysera on turn 7-8 normally wins the game, plus Evasive Drakonid and Emerald Explorer are the perfect anti-smorc cards.

Of course none of it would be possible without and early Frizz Kindleroost, but with the rate of card drawing thanks to Breath and Big Ol' Whelp, it's curve city.

The only decks that represented a problem was Galakrond "Reborn" Priest and, funny enough, Big Hand Warlock.

But man it is awesome the ramping and embiggening on druid right now.

Papa Nurgle wants to share his gifts.

Currently I am sitting around rank 3 to 5. Have played almost every Galakrond version I could think of.

    My conclusions are:

    1. Galakrond Tempo Rogue feels powerful with all the card draw+coin generators and lackeys.

    2. Shaman is, like others already stated busted. Nithogg and the Faceless idiot are just insane in terms of tempo. To Galakrond before activating the quest is mandatory for a successful late game.

    3. Warlock feels like the loser right now. Ofc it's too early to give up, but neither handlock nor zoolock feels strong enough in comparison to shaman (whick deck does that though?!)

    4. Tempo Galakrond Warrior feels extremely solid. Deathwing removes a lot of big stuff and if you manage to keep him alive your opponent has a big threat to deal with. With Control Warrior i don't think the galakrond package is necessary. In fact it feels more like a hindrance.

    5. With Priest I just can't shake the feeling that the potential is huge. The whole discount system through Fate Weaver gives me razakus chills. Especially with a versatile card like Kronx Dragonhoof.

6.I think the non Galakrond classes got some nice additions as well, except for paladin. The weak core set is here the biggest problem but DoD doesn't give enough support. I know Shirvallah might be strong again, but aside from that?

    7. Hunter is the class I struggle the most with in terms of new cards. Can't find a real fit for them. Maybe someone will magically discover a new archetype?! Otherwise highlander hunter will be the stronghold again. Maybe a secret deck makes the cut.

    8. Mage decks feels greedy af right now. Chenvaala hasn't been working for me. Sometimes you get a full board, but your opponent just cleares it with kronx for example. With Flamewaker in wild again Tempo oriented decks have no real midrange. But Apx will find something. That's something i am sure of!

    9. Druid... What can I say... The treant deck feels solid. Not exciting, but yeah... solid... Dragon Druid on the other hand feels Great! I have taken the shell of nomi druid and what can I say?! What it better than a board of 7 big dragons granted through Ysera, Unleashed? Exactly! Nearly endless boards like that, thanks to Elise and flobbi. Ysera is a big finisher. With the possibility of taunts its even stronger when compared to Nomi in my opinion. On top of that here body is a bigger threat than Nomi himself.

Man i'm having so much fun right now!!

The first week of a new expansion is really the best!

I hope you all enjoy it as well!

Druid: I tried Treant Miracle druid, and it was as awful as it sounds. Otherwise, my main impression of druid is that Quest is still good against aggressive decks.

Hunter: Was impressed by a few opponents who pulled off Quest much more effectively than I've ever been able to (not that I've tried again in DoD).

Mage: Haven't given my own mage deck enough of a chance to be worth mentioning. Have faced a LOT of Highlander Dragon Mages though, it seems pretty strong. Not sure why none of them bounce their main dragons though. If I ever build the deck, I'll definitely include Dragon Breeder, maybe even Youthful Brewmaster.

Paladin: Not much impression so far.

Priest: Galakrond build is easier to beat than I expected. That's most of what I've faced, although I did get wiped by someone still playing Combo Priest hitting me with a sudden 18/18 Injured Blademaster. Sigh.

Rogue: Midrange Waxadred Rogue felt awful when I attempted it. I'll need to look up how other people are having more success with Waxadred. Just tempo rogue with weapon removal is serving me decently, though. I've also gotten killed quite a bit by Galakrond Tempo Rogue, although it feels like the real powerhouse there is Faceless Corruptor.

Shaman: I haven't been as impressed with Galakrond Shaman as everyone else. I played it myself (without the Quest) to mediocre effect, and I have a pretty good winrate against it too. The only defeat that really pissed me off had nothing to do with Galakrond; it was just Mogu Fleshshaper > Mutate > Tirion Fordring on turn 3 into Mogu Fleshshaper > Mutate > Princess Talanji on turn 4. That, I'll admit, is pretty broken! I had some pretty good success myself with Aggro Overload Shaman (with no neutral cards, incidentally).

Warlock: I've been much more impressed by Handlock than by Zoo as far as my opponents go. I've played some Midrange Malylock myself; it did great some games and needed work in others, although I'm not sure how much of that was pilot error. It was good enough that I'll keep refining it.

Warrior: Haven't tried it yet myself, but also haven't found it to be quite as scary as people have warned. Not bad though. Mostly pirate-Galakrond seems to be what's going around.

I've played a day and I'm ready to go back to battlegrounds. Shaman's Galakrond is stupid powerful. Every invoke card they play has insane value.

And you don't have to do anything to get these overpowered cards. They are no-brainer includes. Al5so kind of pissed that my only remaining 500-win heros are mage and druid, so no Galakrond for me.

Devoted Maniac's value will vary wildly depending on the class you're playing and the board state. I've found it to be pretty good in Control Warrior because it gets you 5 flexible damage that you can immediately trade with. If you have a Ritual Chopper equipped, or still have a 1 or 2 drop, you can clear most early boards.

Here's my Day 1 impressions after screwing around at Rank 5:

    1) Galakrond Quest Shaman is incredibly strong right now, though I think it's due to the lack of refined decks in the meta that could truly challenge it. The deck generates incredible value and wide boards though, making it really tough to deal with (Dragon's Pack and Corrupt Elementalist are incredibly annoying to face). I still think a quest-less Shaman could be a stronger deck in the future, but we'll see.

    2) Handlock is pretty solid. I tried a control version with some legendary dragons (Alexstrasza, Malygos, Zzeraku the Warped) for a weird late-game approach, and it's working so far. It's the deck I had the most success with (currently 6-2) though it's still clunky.

    3) Galakrond Warrior is strange. I'm still unsure whether it'll be better with a tempo/aggro or control shell. I tried the control shell because I just kept running into a lot of Shamans, but their near-infinite value is just incredibly difficult to outlast. I'm currently tinkering with a more aggressive build to take advantage of Galakrond's hero power.

    4) Galakrond Priest is interesting. It's win condition relies on a late-game Talanji bomb, but I don't know how to proceed in the early and mid-game other than surviving. Maybe a dragon-heavy build is the way to go?

    5) Galakrond Rogue looks like a solid tempo deck too. It just struggles against Shamans right now.

    6) I am REALLY enjoying Deathwing, Mad Aspect, especially when he gets buffed by Galakrond, the Unbreakable. Watching a 16/16 minion lay waste to a whole board is just immensely satisfying.

I have been trying out some mage decks and feel quite happy about the power level. Latest deck is a reno-dragon deck with galaxy spell and boy can this baby snowball hard. The dragons give a lot of control and powerful stats on the board and once galaxy is cast its just basically game over; there is no deck that can handle the extreme value explosion after that.

On a side note: I once faced Murozond the Infinite in a turn where i used Conjurer's calling twice (was the only thing I did that turn). So this spell is cast again two times...but on random minions, and since I had 3 of them and he had only 1, my minions are hit twice again lol insta conceide following. Fun card though.

Any version of Galakrond Shaman is the nuts.

I've had success with Vault Hunter and Control Warrior (feat. a small dragon package).

I suspect that Faceless Corruptor will be nerfed. And somehow Galakrond Shaman will be balanced. It may be as simple as making the Double Invoker cost 6 mana.

Have been fiddling around with Quest Hunter by now.

Diving Gryphon is extremely valuable (as expected) and Veranus puts in some decent work as well (even if she is a bit clunky to get value from consistently)

This has definitely been my favorite build so far.  I've been trying out the following DoD cards and was curious if you've had success with anything else.

Well so far i realy like the expansion - lots of strong cards and ideas i have to try :)

So far i've mostly messed around with :

Pirate Warrior : Pretty strong - if you have the right opening hand you can have 4 minions on turn 1 :) - Everything goes Face and thanks to Hoard Pillager you get extra swings with your weapons :)

Zoo-Lock: Also very strong - thanks to Invoke you can put good pressure on the board - cards like Faceless Corruptor are pretty much OP in here.

Galakrond Shaman: This is so far the strongest list i've tried - you do not need the Quest - you're way faster and stronger without :) The Invoking gives you so much pressure on the board that you do not need the double Battlecry - and Shudderwock replays all the Invoke stuff because they are Battlecrys :)

Hero-Power Hunter: As soon as i saw Dragonbane i was convinced some sort of Hero Power Hunter will rise up - doing decent so far but not as strong as i thought it would be - but still pretty decent :)

I'm still testing and trying out different lists - next will be some sort of Aggro and Dragon Paladin - and i will defenitely will try some Rogue Shenanigans :)

Challenge me ... when you're ready to duel a god!

Pirate warrior feels strong to play - I reckon once the meta settles a bit it'll rest nicely in mid tier 2

Shaman - Galakrond is strong, especially with faceless corupter (this will see a nerf, to good with too many token/lackey generators in this meta) Def tier 1

Highlander Mage - really suprised, this deck seems really good. Thought it might get put out this meta, solid bottom to mid tier 2

Galakrond Rogue - Hard to pilot but can do nearly anything with the right person. Likley tier 2-3 but can be tier1 under the right user.

Hunter - Dragon version is definitley powerful, not many people playing it yet. Highlander is slightly more powerful, again a strong tier 2

Druid - the dragons are really fun, token seems good but just not op enough, reckon druid will settle around tier 3

Priest - reckon galak priest is a sleeper, there's a deck waiting to be found with that.

    Don't Read This Sentence.

    You Rebel. I like you.

The deck I'm having most succes with is Highlander Dragon Mage. Skyfin is actually good to contest board against Shaman, and Dragon Breeder can give so much value combined with Dragonqueen Alexstrasza (or Malygos, Aspect of Magic if you're in a hurry).
