My main concern for this core set is that is not gonna feel as "fresh" of a rotation as prior years coz all the tradable cards are staying in the core set (unless someone can correct me on this, I believe it's every tradable card from UiS staying) and lots of DMF cards are returning to Standard from a 1 year hiatus. We'll have Solar Eclipse with Dew Process combos again among other things.
What I'm getting at is it'd be nice to see more cards from BRM, JtU, WotOG etc, even if they had to be buffed to compete with current power level.
Let's discuss the champ rotations and what they mean for LOR's future "new format'
I'm gonna play legacy still but its no doubt that most LOR players will be in standard:
1. Ziggs - midrange landmarks is a deck I hate to see die I really dont think the mountain man is gonna get it done
2. Poppy - literally sees 0 competitive play although I think she is decent and I run her in yordal tribal
3. Rumble - having a uninteractive all in one style champion is important for the game so let's kill him too?
4. Gangplank - like yeah midrange plunder is one of the best decks since rising tides so obvious rotation choice, but again people like that deck and now it's dead
5. Tf - this one they said already but he's the only champion that levels off draw ans now he's dead
6. Tahm kench - he has some combo brews that aren't fun to play against but once again he's an "important" card in lor
Note: not MF aka the pirate aggro super star???
7. Fiora - another important card that doesn't see a ton of competitive play a little here and there
8. Lux - umm k well 6 cost decks are gone hope you didn't enjoy that play pattern
9. Aniva - wow got that 1 hard core aniva player since vanilla rip that guy I guess
10. Braum - poros too strong confirmed I guess I heart of the fluffed 1 too many pro players
11. Trundle - once again I'll wave as the 1 hard core ramp player left in LOR rip me
12. Lee Sin- that was obvious I already said he can't exist when coins are a thing but its a shame I like his design
13. Irelia - people actually play her a lot and she didn't really need to be rotated so rip azir irelia fans I guess
14. Lulu - lulu Jinx too strong confirmed cuz you know I've seen the discard challenger combo once this year?
15. Yassao - okay this format is dead to me yassao is LOR - not because he's good but because he isn't and that's the point
So without going into any more of the leaks I had said that rotation was gonna be a shit show and man the show has been pooped hard.
I feel like this rotation list was chosen by the pro players who got mad at off meta but niche effective list and decided to kill them.
Like hallowed is still a thing right?
Because it's competitive cancer?
But noooo yassao too strong boys I don't like losing to bad decks cuz it makes me look like a bad player.
Well guess what hypothetical LOR player you are bad, like really bad and killing half the well designed Champs in the game won't change that.
----bold prediction---
This is the gold card phase of LOR for those familiar with Gwent.
Where a perfectly amazing and well balanced card game gets killed because the pro player community gets whiney when the linear set of plays and decks doesn't work under new circumstances.
Well guess what this ain't chess card games evolve, they change, they become something new. Just because you were top 50 one year and now you're only rank 0 masters doesn't mean the game is broken it means you're set in your ways and killing LOR to satisfy your competitive ego won't change anything cuz the game will just die and then where will you and your hard-core ego driven ass be?
On the road looking for a new game like the rest of us.
----more leaks---
1. Zoe yeah cuz you know I tried bard zeo lately and it is in fact aaaaa deck like there are cards in a pile that you can play no she isn't too strong so she has to die
2. Taric ummm what? He isn't even niche good like he's just straight bad
3. Aphelios - come on I know gravitum spam is annoying but he's a cool card let the meme stars meme Jesus
4. Katarina - yeah rally spam I understand that since all rallies became 4 mana Katarina is literally better than all rallies but she dies to mystic so let people have her I say
5. Ezreal - literally non competitive for a while now I know the spell play priority change made him frustrating but he's well designed now after 20 balance changes
6. Vi - again what does P and Z not get bad challenger champions now?
7. Viktor - he's a bad card for bad players so let's kill him? Again why so many non competitive cards?
8. Vlad - I knew this and guess what I still don't like it shockers. He is a well designed bad card and I like that he exists
9. Draven - he's as LOR as Yassao and now Draven doesn't have his fan and I'm no longer a fan of LOR simple as that
10. Xerath - yep niche competitive decks like sundisc have no place in the new LOR it's too uninteractive and frustrating for the hard cores sooooryyy
11. Zillian - what's the deal with time bombs he just gets infinite draw thats sooooo broken? Sarcasm
12. Sivir - spellshield too op guys you mean she doesn't get vengenced kill the card too broken
Okay now it's just wtf?
I went from incredulous, to frustrated, to just defeated and sad reading this list.
The more competitive the champion the more likely it survived rotation.
The more niche and intriguing the more likely it dies.
Maybe not everyone wants something competitive :) yea, i do agree to what you're saying about snap. But it's fun. A different kind of fun that HS failed to provide for years, and runeterra didn't really fit in my mind somehow.
Between hours of Starbourne 2 and other games, playing a bit of snap is different and fun, makes you think on how to win or trick your opponent, or whether to risk a 50/50 win or just retreat and cut losses.
Don't get me wrong it's not great into elites and Annie, cuz you know hand vommit is cheaper then removal.
But man into everything else this deck puts in the work and it's my favorite list going into the expansion for that perfect balance between memes and competitive play styles.
1. Removal heavy makes the deck durable and responsive
2 follower curve gives you some resilience with chump blockers
3. Lots of burn in case your shrome play patterns get responded to
4. Otk combo obviously your primary win conditions of doubling traps or procing 5 cards deep
5. Easy catlyn level for an additional burst wincon
6. Lots of puffcap peddler fuel
7. The one of hexcore foundry is just perfect more than one is a liability and you have your draw card anyways
I gotta say I'm proud of this you can measure the weight of an LOR player by his Temo and my furry bastard is strong.
---expansion talk---
Where does flashbomb peddler fit in? He might actually exist in a different deck where you also run the 4 mana card and now you're not a combo deck you're full on flashbomb control.
And then you're combining it with a champion that likes free removal maybe Kindred? Maybe something different who knows. There is an interesting world where you hit a critical mass of flashbombs to hard lock opponents into ladros atrocity. That would be funny.
----edit---
Okay I'm gonna say this again my brews I easily go 30 games over two weeks against everything.
Jamming a bunch of aggro and burn into a list without cohesion doesn't make a deck that you can actually play into any relavent matchups where the opponent isn't drawing you cards.
Like if your deck is good if you're confident in its performance actually play it! That's the only test. Not oh I one off memed and that matters somehow in your own mind.
Good decks are playable into the meta for months and months on end. My diamond dragon deck has seen play since the last expansion, I modify I tweak but the deck stays the same, do your brews see play on ladder or anywhere actually outside of a one day binge?
I even see players mirroring my decks now because they are confused why I keep winning. Well be confused you're not me, you never will be but you can try to emulate or counter me if you want. It just won't work for long.
Thank you for looking through the whole thing, it's a lot to take in so I appreciate the time!
I wanted to tell a story with the art and design of the set, an overabundance of tropes and references would've weakened that in this case. I still did slip in a few, Red Giant being one of the first tongue in cheek designs I made. Was definitely neat trying to find the balance between Hearthstone wackiness and serious world building.
I'll try and hop in on more card competitions, I usually see them and then get distracted with work or what have you.
It's pretty arrogant to say that someone else only likes winning and doesn't like fun in any other way. It's also changing the subject. No one said you can't put a card in a deck and start a game and implying otherwise is really disengenous. The subject here is whether or not a card effectively does the cool thing it's intended to do. And what you're talking about instead is whether or not the card's existence amuses you.
I get that you don't play Demon Hunter and the card's existence is amusing in and of itself. No one's saying otherwise. But that's not the point. The issue is with people who are actually trying to use the card to do the thing it's intended to do -- which you're not and that's fine, no need to be sensitive about that. Just because you can't answer what other people's play experiences are doesn't mean anybody's trying to stop you from playing the card, you're fine! And if you can't answer an argument that you started, that's no reason for you to feel intimidated or put out or lash out, we're all friends here! The issue is that people who want to play the card for its intended effect are going to have a hard time. I get that you don't understand that and that's fine, but there are more people out there than just the ones who don't care about that.
If you're netdecking to legend, great! Nothing wrong with that. But there's a lot of people who don't have a lot of money or dust who are trying to have fun with with the few resources we have and crafting the wrong thing or trying to use something that looks like it's going to work but doesn't can be a big downer. Coming down on us because we're trying to navigate a budget is kinda toxic. Upthread, I gave high marks to Paladin using the same logic I used for Demon Hunter but you didn't get really mad there, but got mad with Demon Hunter (that you don't play). A glowing review doesn't mean " you're good" and a negative review doesn't mean "you're bad."
People trying to make tight budget decisions aren't coming for you my guy! I hope you have a good time with the set.
Interesting thing to remember is that this litterally shuffles a "snapshot" card into your deck, like how Elise the Trailblazer shuffles a un'goro pack. So this doesn't have the upside/downside (depending on how you look at it) of Dead Man's Hand filling your deck, and you can play the snapshot whenever your hand is almost empty. This seems good for control or OTK decks.
One deck that MIGHT run this is Frost DK, because they can use this to dupe spells in their hand so they have a reload. Altough it can also mess with frost-spell synergy so that might be a little bit of anti-synergy. Blood DK can also run this to get more board clears or other valueable cards. Maybe control Paladin can also use this? This just seems like a really nice card for a lot of decks.
This seems pretty good. Worst case scenario you force your opponent to play some plain 3 mana 3/3 mechs, which is actually not that bad. On curve this could guarantee you get 1 mech on the deathrattle, and forcing your opponent to play one, is yet again a good thing. if you force your opponent to play one of the mechs, then that's -1 turn for your opponent to do whatever gameplan they actually want to do. Additionally, this card can also be used to mill your opponent, which is a interesting thing to remember.
I think this card will see play in aggro/midrange decks.
DH never really had board-wide attakc buffs, so this could be a massive enable for Token DH's ability to actually win (instead of just running a bunch of tokens into minions and then dying)
It almost always going to get at least one draw off of itself and as long as you have Shielded minions on board when you play this it's probably going to be more.
The only issue might be that it's too slow if you fell ever so slightly behind, but I guess that's just Paladin's weakness in general.
Edit: Steamcleaner is a thing, so nvm that combo might be decent.
Okay now seriously, this will see a bunch of play because some classes can abuse this card for some mean strats. One of these being The Jailer + Tony, King of Piracy. I think some warlock deck that uses The Jailer + Mal'Ganis might use Tony, King of Piracy as well as a back-up strat, in case the opponent manged to remove their board with a Twisting Nether like effect.

Hot Take - I Don't View Marvel Snap As Competitive
Pay to win mechanics.
A rigid meta with clear power ratios for cards
Randomized locations
0 mulligans
0 removal
I've said it before and I'l say it again I don't really know what Mogwai sees in this game
I usually just use it as a casual distraction from LOR when I want shiny lights and to hear the announcer say "animated!"
But as a competitive experience no thank you I'd rather buy a loto card.
New Neutral Minion - E.T.C., Band Manager
So if I play this card once, without bouncing it back to hand, then I only get one side-band member, correct?

Year of the Scarab Core Set
You forgot to Update Holy Champion. It's a 2-mana 1/4
New Neutral Minion - Photographer Fizzle
Interesting thing to remember is that this litterally shuffles a "snapshot" card into your deck, like how Elise the Trailblazer shuffles a un'goro pack. So this doesn't have the upside/downside (depending on how you look at it) of Dead Man's Hand filling your deck, and you can play the snapshot whenever your hand is almost empty. New Demon Hunter Minion - Halveria Darkraven
DH never really had board-wide attakc buffs, so this could be a massive enable for Token DH's ability to actually win (instead of just running a bunch of tokens into minions and then dying)
New Paladin Spell - Spotlight
Hard to say how good this is. If you combo it with a 1-drop it's a 3-mana 5/5, which is good, but not insane.
Best case scenario is just being able to drop it on 2, but that's very easy to play around.
New Paladin Minion - Jitterbug
It almost always going to get at least one draw off of itself and as long as you have Shielded minions on board when you play this it's probably going to be more.
The only issue might be that it's too slow if you fell ever so slightly behind, but I guess that's just Paladin's weakness in general.
New Demon Hunter Spell - Rush the Stage
It'S hard to evaluate, but it's a 1-mana draw 2 for any deck that focusses on Rush synergies and it possibly enables some combos.
New Neutral Minion - Tony, King of Piracy
Tony, King of Piracy + The Fires of Zin-Azshari = bronze rank 10 due to the generated cards being better then most warrior cards. Finally a good warrior combo. :(
Edit: Steamcleaner is a thing, so nvm that combo might be decent.
New Demon Hunter Spell - SECURITY!!
Pretty solid honestly. Token DH needs Token generators and the Core stuff just isn't enough.
Sinful Brand got nerfed, but it proved to be a solid way to finish games, so maybe it makes a return in a dedicated token deck
New Paladin Minion - Funkfin
I mean, as a standalone minion it's somewhat weak, but it's basically Savage Roar for Paladin, which is something the class has never had access to.
Really, it all depends how easily you can flood with Divine Shield Minions and how easy it is to keep those shields up.
