HSReplay.net put out a list of the top 5 Legendary cards in Scholomance Academy and today we'll not only be reporting on that but also commenting on our card predictions with respect to them. We've included some decks you can take for a spin that make use of these fine and not at all overpowered cards.
We have updated the scores from the original time they were taken. The new values will be seen throughout the post with the old ones being available at the end.
#5 - Rattlegore
Rattlegore takes the last-place finish on this list, though being in the top five is a wonderful feat so it shouldn't be disappointed.
With 4.1% of decks making use of the pure Warrior legendary, almost three times less than our number one pick, Rattlegore still remains a strong card with crazy staying power, though wasn't rated very well coming out with an overall score of 52 with our voting data from pre-expansion.
Looking to play Rattlegore yourself? Here's a somewhat popular list of Big Warrior that includes this delightfully annoying minion. Just remember, never keep this card in your opening hand!
#4 - Lorekeeper Polkelt
In fourth, we've got Lorekeeper Polkelt. He just barely missed our compendium list with an overall score of 71, so rated relatively highly by the community!
Game stats put our Lorekeeper friend just a bit above Rattlegore at 4.7% of decks making use of the card. If you want something fun to play, BobbyEx took it for a spin in Aggro Demon Hunter this past weekend and it is quite a fun list! Lorekeeper combos perfectly with bringing Skull of Gul'dan to the top of your deck, letting you easily activate the Outcast cost reductions. Mana cheating gone wild!
#3 - Mozaki, Master Duelist
We're climbing up in the ranks of legendary popularity with the new Mage card, Mozaki, Master Duelist sitting comfortably in the middle.
If you're seeing mage on ladder, you're likely running into Mozaki with its 6.3% inclusion in all decks. Spell Damage Mage can be quite fun, and on a personal note was one of the decks I was most excited about, so if you're wanting to give it a go and a craft, you should check out this list from Crimsonpanda.
Oh, and before you check that out, this card was only rated an average of 57 by the community, not even cutting into the top 3 cards for Mage.
#2 - Speaker Gidra
8.9% of all decks. Speaker Gidra is a very popular legendary on ladder but still has room to grow when compared to our number 1 slot - more on that in a moment.
If you played on launch day, Gidra most likely caught you a little off guard initially. Druid, and Shaman, hit a slam dunk with the ability to grow this card into some huge stats early on with its mana cheating capabilities. The community here on Out of Cards ended up rating this a 66, so at least we're going in the right direction when compared to Mozaki.
If you want to play with Gidra, it feels like a very safe craft at this point and the worst-case scenario is it gets nerfed and you get your dust back. Check out this Malygos Druid deck from Hearthstone World Champion, Hunterace.
#1 - High Abbess Alura
The mighty High Abbess Alura is top dog in the Scholomance Academy popularity contest. It is a steep jump from 5 to 1 with Alura being played in 12.4% of decks!
Unfortunately for us, Alura didn't even make the top 5 in the multiclass highlights in our compendium with a score of only 66, the same as Gidra. Meanwhile, Forest Warden Omu, who was rated third of all legendaries in the set at 77, is only seeing play in 2.4% of decks. Perhaps Alura's time at the top won't be for long, but Paladin is crushing it right now and the ridiculous buffs that go out make for some fun turns if you aren't on mobile.
If you want to destroy your fellow Hearthstone players on ladder, Feno has a great Lightforged Paladin list that Alura stars in. Craft this card, you won't have any regrets.
Verdict: Are We Surprised?
Not entirely! Rattlegore definitely was an outlier with the community not putting much focus onto the card during the time before Scholomance came out, but things could change at any moment since the Scholomance meta is still so new. We've already seen Rattlegore drop a little bit in popularity while Paladin's Alura continues to climb.
Don't let lists like these make you rethink playing any of your current favourite legendary cards though - play to have fun and go through the deckbuilding process to make something you can be proud of.
Comments
I absolutely did not expect High Abbess Alura to be this popular. Apparently, cheating out Buffs is good enough rn.
I doubt though that her Playrate will stay like that. When the Decks will be more refined and the Meta settles, she probably won't be a Problem due to Removal.
Interesting, got all of them, and Polkelt, Mozaki and Gidra in gold :) Polkelt and Gidra are amazing!
Not surprised by this list, except for Rattlegore, which I thought would almost see no play at all. Alura really is too good, she should cost 5 mana.
I got High Abbess Alura for my login freebie on Day 1 of Scholomance. I also unpacked Lorekeeper Polkelt and Mozaki, Master Duelist from packs, so I am doing pretty well on this list! I have not used the latter two at all yet, but I found some decklists that incorporate them. I see Speaker Gidra all the time on ladder - a good card in both Shaman and Druid (mostly see Druids, but every Shaman I have faced has it too).
High Abbess Alura is climbing the ranks of a card to be targeted with a nerf sooner than later. With all the amazing buffs that paladin and priest have at their disposal currently, this card is certainly a difficult thing to deal with. Tack on any circumstantial board buffs like Robes of Protection and you've got a wonderfully difficult minion to deal with... especially if it had a spell to give it taunt... ugh.
Rattlegore is just too damned expensive honestly. I cracked him right out the gate and haven't touched him. I have hope that he will find a niche in a control deck that will be somehow able to protect him (maybe with the inclusion of the previously stated Robes of Protection) but in and of itself, it's more of a meme card.
One legendary that I am shocked to not see on the popularity list is Doctor Krastinov. Again he seems to be more of niche card. However with the availability of weapons at Rogue's disposal now, I just don't understand why he is not more prevalent. His buff is conditional, which makes his ability slightly less good than good ole' Captain Greenskin, but the notion that it can be triggered numerous times is why I imagined him to be more present.
I'm very surprised with Mozaki being this popular. The card isn't easy to use at all. Too many aggro decks on ladder to play a combo deck with her without having a miserable time. Ras Frostwhisper is much easier to use and is a nice addition to Highlander Mage. I don't have Evocation, Chenvaala or Astromancer Solarian and i'm not very interested in making such a big investment so i'll probably just ignore Mozaki.
I certainly underrated Rattlegore and i'm tempted to craft the card but i'm still being careful around it. I'll probably craft Alura for Priest but i don't have Lady Liadrin so Libram Paladin is off limits. I have tried Polkelt in Highlander decks and it's nice to have a guaranteed draw on a big late game card. I'm still not very comfortable with the appropriate time to play him though. And i took 22 damage from Gidra yesterday. That card is a must remove threat. If you fail to deal with it then it can actually kill you from out of nowhere.
I have a golden Polkelt, I guess I can take that aggro list for a swing.
Shame I didn't pull Rattlegore in my pack opening, guess I'll have to craft him for my "play 2 10 cost cards" daily quest
Can someone please elaborate on this statement:
Does the game crash on mobile or is it just very long games? I frequently play on mobile, so if there are known crashing issues, will stay clear till they fixed.
I'm super curious about this as well!
I'm surprised Ras Frostwhisper isn't on this list. That dude single-handedly swings games so often for me, I think he is quite underrated. I'm not surprised Speaker Gidra is popular; there's literally nothing weak with that card. Even if you play a 2 mana spell with her that's a 3 mana 3/7 rush windfury, and on turn 5 that can clear up some minions and still pose a threat on the board.
I have a golden Speaker Gidra, very nice it is. I also had a golden Turalyon, the Tenured but I dusted it as I can't see that being played any time soon outside of the really bad duel paladin. The art on the golden version wasn't even that good.
I also have a golden Professor Slate and that's on the watch list for being dusted lol
Wow you dusted Turalyon without even trying him. Too many people buying into the negative pre expansion hype about him so no one's even testing him out. He has a very powerful effect and isn't easy to kill as a 3/9 with their biggest minion off the board. And if he lives just one turn its a disaster for the opponent.
I didn't have any deck ideas to test him in. I didn't lose anything and can craft him later if I do.
Wow are you so lucky
Not really lucky, two of them were the pre-order bonuses. One was luck though :D
I have only ever crafted one golden legendary and that was Whizzbang!
Happy that Rattlegore is on the list :)
Great article!
I wonder what the least most popular are? Hold on, let me check my collection and I'll tell you as I only got a few and they'll probably be on the list :P :P
